I am new to Triathlons. In fact I did my first 5k in August. I am training and planning on doing my first sprint in Feb 09. Am I crazy to shot for a HIM in November of 2009. I have been biking since April, running since August and swimming for about a month. I am starting with 2 pool swim sprints then a few open water swims and a olympic distance in August 2009. I am contemplating signing up for the Beach to battleship HIM in November. I have no endurance sport history but I am inclined to sign up for it, train for it, and just suffer through it. I know I have not experienced a triathlon yet (still mad that the YMCA canceled the indoor tri last week, it would have been great practice)
Q1 Am I biting off more than I can chew
Q2 Do most HIM fill up or can you sign up at the last minute(how can you tell)?
Q3 Why am I so excited about this.....?

On a side note... for my first Tri I will have a bike, goggles, cap, sunglasses and running shoes------Am I missing anything important?

Not crazy at all. HIM isn't all that bad. Sign up for it. It's the stupid things we do in life that we remember most fondly....

Swim:
Goggles
Cap (provided)
Earplugs (if your ears suck water)
Wetsuit (if iz cold)

Bike:
Shoes
Shorts
Shirt
Helmet
Bike

Run:
Shoes
Shorts
Shirt

Bonus:
Race belt
Water
Calories

Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.

Hi!, I'm not pro and have only one and a half season on my back, doing my 1st 1/2 IM in 2 weeks time and from my (little) experience nothing of what you say sounds unreasonable. You have over 40 weeks ahead and if you can put an average 8 to 10 weekly hours of training you'll be sweet to finish your 1/2 IM. Less than that would probably still do it.
I would say that the important thing would be for you to race your races one at the time and if you do enjoy them sit down around March and set you objective (1/2 IM?, Oly?) and a plan of how to get there, this may involve you getting a coach for any of the sports or all of them, or joining a club, etc.
the second important one is not to over do it, and start swimming 20k's in the pool, riding 300k's a week and running 100k's coz then you'll be sick of it quite soon,
Cheers and train smart!

Absolutely! I'm in a similar situation I had been conditioning myself for nearly a year but I've recently picked up the pace at 5 months out from my half-ironman. Now that I'm approx a month deep into intense training I've deduced from results that if I stay steady on the routine I will run the race in April.

Hey glad to see someone that lives close to me on here yea! Go for it on the 1/2 IM in Nov.!
Do you cycle w/ that group in columbia? That would really help alot. The Beach to battleship
was new last year and they filled up pretty fast. I think dec. is when they start the registration.
Good luck to you. Maybe i will see yu at some of SC Set-up events series races next year.
Happy Training!:)

If your goal is to finish you will do just fine. Build the endurance over the course of the year. Do some trial triathlon races - start with sprint, then do one or two olympic distance triathlons as you train for the half. The half is really an ideal distance (at least for me) as you can train for it and still maintain good social and family life. 8-12 hours a week can fit into almost anyone's schedule. When I did my first half I followed plan from Gale Bernhard's book - Training Plans for Multisport Athletes - the one to finish HIM. Or if you can afford it get help from professional coach - it may be just to get the plan together for your specific situation. In any case take it easy and build slowly over the year - it is long time between now and next November.

I believe B2B filled-up few weeks before the race. But they got good press this year and may fill-up sooner. If you want to do it take the plunge and secure your spot. I typically book my A-priority races as soon as they open registration.

Hard to say... ;-). But it will change your life quite a bit. It did for me.

Well the essentials for that race will most likely be:
1. Wetsuit (you can rent it) - I've heard the water was very cold this year and few people got hypothermia when they swam the full ironman distance.
2. Definitely a bike with slicks (any bike will do for your first tri), but try to get road or tri bike for the half. It is easier to get through it on better bike. It may be tough to meet the cutoff times on mountain bike - 56 miles is relatively long ride and the mountain bike gearing is not ideal for the road.
3. For the bike think about the clothing you will have - good bike jersey and road bike shorts can save you quite a bit of energy compared to flapping cotton t-shirt and baggy shorts. Also consider what to wear if the weather is not ideal - e.g. rain, cold, etc.
4. For the run get comfortable shoes and clothing (can be the same as for the bike - I race in one piece suit - oh that reminds me I need a new one as the last one got destroyed in my last race of the season)

And for the race - just go out and enjoy the experience.

1) you are not bitting off more than you can chew
2) sign up now so you are really focused with no excuses
3) you are excited because its an Ironman...well half but I was so pumped for mine last year.

good luck bro you got this.

Go for it.

One year ago I was in almost the exact same position you're in now. I was so excited about triathlon I signed up for almost everything I could find - almost one tri per month from my first in November '07 to the Utah Half in August '08.

If you're interested in knowing how well (or not) it went, clicky: http://www.trifuel.com/forum/15228/utah-half-the-death-march

If I can do it, anyone can; I did it this year- also went the one race a month route- a little overkill, in my 20/20 hindsight, but I loved the highlight: my 1st HIM in Nov. I basically focused all my work on that one, and had a blast the whole way training and racing.

I say go for it, you have almost a year to prepare and you sound like you have a pretty decent base built up already so there shouldnt be any fear in dedicating your training to that distance.

You'll have plenty of time to think about it later. Just sign up now. If you keep thinking, eventually you'll find a reason to not do it.

On the subject of signing up, Beach to Battleship is filling fast. Commit now, or you wont get in.

go for it, but make sure you're enjoying what your doing. Don't make triathlons work. Also, one of the above posts said that water and calories were "bonus"... heck no! water and calories are right up there with clothing, maybe even up there with your race number!!! Don't get dehydrated because you didn't have water at your transition area, don't bonk because you didin't want to cary a gel or two. Check out what Luke Bell (an Ausi) did at Kona IM 04 (I think...). the story you're looking for is when he accidentally dropped his gel's at the start of the bike and had a brush with disaster because he didn't want to lose time due to going back for them.

Treat your body right so it can treat you right.
