OMG!!!
Yep...that's why they call it a Deca...(10IMs)
Very impressive, but I'm pretty sure they are all sick in the head a bit...especially since it's all done in a pool/on a short closed loop so they can monitor their health throughout. Still amazing
I just assumed everyone knew about the race. I guess not everyone is as tri-geek'd as me :) hah
Yea some people just cant get enough torture!
the small courses are the oddest part about it...if you're going to cover almost 1200mi, at least get some scenery in!
very impressive performances by anyone who finishes such an event!!
That is pretty durn nutty!!
I'll bet all the participants could celebrate a gulit free Thanksgiving today!! ;-)
'Nothing to it, but to do it!'
IN A POOL????? I think I would drown myself at about 6m in a pool...24m???? I hope someone counts laps for them...dear god...
From what I have heard about them... Deca's are not non-stop, in fact they have a full time kitchen at all times for athletes to stop, take a break, get a bite to eat and then resume...
Not that it makes it any different, those peeps are CRAZY!!!!!
Jeff
yeah, doesn't even kind of sound a little fun.
how do you even TRAIN for that?! Man, if that's not a recipe for divorce, I don't know what is...
Taper Naked
I don't think you train for it, you just live that way everyday! ;-)
'Nothing to it, but to do it!'
Yeah the ROI for bragging rights seems very low...
Just the fact that it's held in such a small venue, and repeated...
It seems more of a monastic experience than anything else. :)
Here is the Blog from the race...written by a friend of mine who was crewing. He's also the RD for the Double and Triple IM held here in the US. Great stuff for me to read especially as I know some of the folks racing...they are far from "crazy."

The pics of the feet!! I guess with all the swimming and miles of running... pounding on soggy feet...
they are far from "crazy."
It's all relative. :) Most of the general public thinks running a marathon after a 180k bike and 3.8k swim is "crazy".

I once read something out of Triathlete magazine (or website), about the 2007 event. I think you do not do it non stop. You start an Ironman every day for ten days.
how do they do it without getting injured..I mean, how many times have we asked ourselves, is this race gonna be too close to that one for recovery...I mean, this is constant pushing. I can't wrap my mind around it.

Used to be that way...an IM everyday for 10 days. Now, it's swim bike run until done! The swim for the Decas was 380 laps of a 50 meter pool. (Average time was around 8 hours)....then laps on a closed bike and run course. Go to the blog and read it, it's awesome....gets my mouth watering.( The spirit is willing, the wallet won't allow it.) Finishing times at over 200 hours, some finishers going for 12 days...

My big questions are when and how much do they sleep? How does one's body keep moving forward?

No matter how you slice it, that's still one amazing feat. Both physically and mentally. Especially mentally...after considering the venue.

I'll race my first Deca right after I'm finished walking over hot coals and stabbing myself in the eye 100 times each with needles. I wonder how long it takes to recover from a Deca?

LOL
Congratulations! I'm sure there is a special category for blind participants.
The fun part of this thread is that I get the same reactions from other people when I talk about doing one single short IM. Maybe we are all crazy

There's a short IM?
There's a short IM?
Yes, i read somewhere that it is ten times shorter than a Deca
It's called perspective. Most of us lack any at this point. Try talking to someone outside the gym or your training group. Someone who doesn't have 300 posts on Trifuel. Talk to them about your last swim set, or last long run in the snow. Then you might gain back some perspective and see who is nutty or who's a freak:)

I just went to Triathlete magazine web site and read the first headline: "Heinig first to finish Deca. Looked interesting. Then I read the rest of the article.
This man finished the World Challenge Deca Triathlon in Monterey, Mexico. He finished with a time of 212hours 29 minutes and 2 seconds. At fisrt I thought that was a typo until they gave the distances he traveled.
24 mile swim- 1120 mile bike- 262 mile run. If I did my math right that's 10 Ironmansnon non-stop!
OMG- is all I can say.
