Ever lose a toenail?

I had a century mtb ride 2 weeks ago, and after the ride one of my big toe nails was very sensitive to being pressed on. I think I hurt it with all the miles in the cycling shoes with some hiking, which they are not designed to do.

Anyways, it feels a little funny and even soft around the edges compared to my other good one, and I'm afraid I killed it and it's going to fall off. What do I do if that happens? Wrap it up? Leave it alone? Put on Neosporin? Has anyone ever lost a whole nail? If so, what did you do and how long until it grew back???

I actually lost about 8 training for and running my first marathon. It never really hurt, but I was such a newbie to endurance sports that I didn't know any better. Since then, I've learned to buy bigger shoes. Plus, I also just keep my toenails cut down to the quick so that I don't have problems again. Yeah, my feet aren't the prettiest when I'm wearing sandals in the summer, but I save lots of money on pedicures!

In my 2006 IMC run, I killed 6 toenails - 3 on each foot, including the big toe.
It took 6 months for them all to fall off.

A new one was growing underneath each and the transition was relatively painless.
I didn't bandage anything and am fine now.

I usually lose my second toe nail since that toe is longer than my big toe. Right now in the
process of losing two nails. My nail usually is tender for several days then it changes color.
I love to play with mine when they start getting really loose which usually sickens most
people i know. I suggest just leaving it alone.
