As I was swimming today and my shoulder was acting up, I began to wonder (since I am new to a FULL IM training program); how many times in your own training program do you actually swim the 2.4 miles (x number of yards, in one swimming session)? I haven't looked that far ahead in my training plan, but I am guessing my total yardage during the swim would be around 3900yds, and I have only reached 2300yds. Just wondering how many times you all reach that 2.4mi mark in a single session prior to race day.

Oops...I think my math was wrong, I think the yardage is more around 4400yds. My head is still water logged!

the last few weeks i devote one session to a long swim...2miles or a little more...say 3-4 times....if you do it 2-3 times in the last 3 weeks, you'll be fine. even if you just do the 2 miles....and my swim training is below average by most standards...i am sure there are others out there that do lots more. if you are just looking to get through the swim and feel good, i would say shoot for 2-3 2+mile swims starting about 5 weeks out...5, 4, 3....2 weeks out you could still do a long one as it does not take too much out of you....good luck.what race are you training for?

3 to 4 is good...I shoot for once a week in the 6 weeks prior...excluding the last few weeks of course. You don't have to swim it too often.

macker...I am training for Lake Placid....Anton, agrees with you and I believe he is going to be at Placid too....so I'll be shooting for once a week after the mid point of my training plan. Thanks for the quick responses, I felt like I wasn't swimming long/far enough already, but seems I am pretty much on track.

Do you mean swim 2.4 miles continously in one session, or swim a session that has intervals that add up to 2.4 miles??

On the first, I swim 2.4 miles maybe 3 or 4 times before IM day. Sometimes I would swim the last half of it with a pull buoy for greater upper body fatigue (more like you get with a wetsuit where you can't kick as much).

On the second, I swim a 4200 yard workout twice a week. I guess that's pretty close to the distance, but it's made up of smaller sets.

2.4 miles=4224 yards, or just under 169 lengths of a 25-yard pool.

I aim for single workouts of this distance about 7-8 times during IM training. Last year, I managed it 4 or 5 times (once was in open water) because I developed some shoulder soreness in the middle of training and took 2 weeks off from the long stuff. I think swimming is much more about frequency, but mentally it is nice to have some 4k swims notched on your belt prior to the race.

Also, when you feel pain in your shoulder, stop swimming. If you haven't had a coach evaluate your form or instruct you on proper form, do so. You'll be a much more effective swimmer in the long run if you aren't always hurting.

I do swim workouts that are about 3,500-4,500 yards throughout the year, genearlly about 3 times a week. However come about 12 weeks out I'll start doing a long swim on Saturday's what's around 7,000+ yards. I just swim for time on them, and then mentally count of chunks of laps.

But everyone's different. My goal isn't to record a super-fast swim time. My primary goal in the swim is to make the swim a non-event. Meaning, my goal is to just float on by in the swim.

Lastly, remember what your goal is. If your goal is finishing, then I'd focus more on the run/bike and take your time in the swim. If your goal is Kona, then you'll want to focus on all the disciplines more.
