Another HRM Question

I've seen some threads recently on HRMs and whatnot, but wanted to check with the knowledge-base on this forum before picking up a new one.

My wife's HRM was destroyed - neither of my dogs have fessed up but one of them did it. So, I'm looking to get her a new one for her birthday.

As for features - I'd like it to give a continuous reading. So I'm guessing I'll need the kind with a strap, as opposed to a wrist only model. The other feature I'd like is a calorie count - but I'd like to get one with an accurate calorie count (as accurate as possible). Ideally, you'd plug in height, weight, sex, etc. (only one time), and from then on the calories burned is based upon that info.

Which brands should I be focused on for quality? This one made it about 6-9 months before it started acting up (so not the end of the world that the dogs got it) - I'd like to get something that lasts a bit longer - is 3 years too much to ask?

Any tips or ideas on specific models? Any cheap places online that will be better than the local sports store/gym?

Thanks again,
orangedog

My Polar does all that and is a bike computer as well(no foot pod for running, they didn't make one that does everything when I got it). Its the S525 , and I have had it for over 5 years. Just had the battery changed by a local Polar repair shop last weekend for the first time. Hubby has one too (different one though) and just changed the battery as well, his is only slightly newer and he has had to change the band but no biggie. I would check their site (www.polarusa.com) and see what ones have the features you want. They all use a chest strap and will probably all be good quality.

I have a Polar RS200 that does everything you're looking for. You can buy it with or without the footpod. I got mine without for $139 at REI last winter.

Polar is the industry leader. Suunto also makes good stuff from what I hear. The Timex Ironman series seems to have its fans too. I had a Nike for a while that suited me just fine (3+ yrs) until the wrist strap failed.

3 years is not too much to ask; though maybe you should ask the dogs this question.

ok - the bottom of the line polar is what she had before, so maybe I'll stay inside that brand. thanks for the tips!

OH one more thing--when I was looking for hubbys I noticed some of the lower end don't have a back light. I like to see where I am at for time when I am running and in the winter it is often in the dark. I actually returned one because it didn't have one and just assumed they all did.

ah - that is a good tip! my wife uses it in spinning and they dim the lights. she's often complained that she had a hard time reading it.

alright, got one picked up - on clearance plus a coupon - $32... can't complain, and I was sure to check for the backlight and programmable user profile.

thanks again!
