So... as some of you know .... I was once a very good triathlete. Now, My asthma is even more crappy when I try to go for a run it is horrible. Symbicort seemed to help but it would cost me 150$ a month to use it! I have medical insurance but my deductible is around 1500$ a year.

Any one have any advice or can share what they are doing ?

I have tried about 7 different meds all with different results.

I don't know what to tell you other than what I'm sure you already know. Run indoors if possible, especially in the winter when the air gets dry. Unforturtunately a generic formulation of Symbicort won't be out for some time. Avoid COX inhibitors (aspirin). Just ask your physician next time you're in for a check up (you do go regularly right??) and tell him about your involvement with triathlon.

I use advair - which costs me about $40 per month after my insurance company pays its share. I also use an albuterol inhaler before each workout. If the air temp is below 50 F I stay inside. My asthma hasn't been too bad, although I do get an adverse reaction to the albuterol during some workouts occasionally. My next step if it did get worse would be to look for foods that might trigger it.

Good luck. I hope your doc can help you find a good way through.

I use flovent on a daily basis. It is one of the ingredients in Advair. I also have an albuterol inhaler when needed. My asthma is really only bad when the seasons change. So during those few weeks I just have to make sure I carry my medicine all the time.

I think finding an ashtma medicine that works is kind of trial and error. Some may work, others wont and it has a lot to do with what causes the asthma.

Singulair works for me along with an albuterol inhaler when needed.

a good place to start is two inhalations of albuterol 30 minutes prior to a workout. advair or symbicort are always going to be expensive until they become generic, and sometimes people don't need both (the corticosteroid and the long acting beta 2 agonist). but it would also be important to find out if part of your asthma may have an allergic component, and may need to be treated that way.

the best solution, as always, is to see your primary care physician, and possibly seek a referral to a pulmonologist or allergist if your pcp is unable to help.

the whole medical complex is a complete scam. they want to charge me 1000$ for an office visit to see pulmonary doctor. i am middle america. do they think i can afford this ? i even have insurance. they can't even say they will help me. they just say ... mr.chris that will cost more.. that will cost more... they have NO SHAME. NONE. i am not sure how the medical industry can even look at its own face. the sad thing is i know some doctors who are triathletes. i tell them my situation and they OFFER NOTHING to help. NOTHING. i out right asked one for some help after meeting him at the YMCA and he kinda just laughed at me. sorry dude i don't have 100$ bills coming out of my a$$. they just want insurance money. thats it. SCAM. i called DUKE university looking for help. Yeah right. I called USC. Nope. I'm tired of spending the money when all they want to do is write a script and cash in the insurance and say NEXT PLEASE.

maybe some DOCTOR will find it in there souls to help this former triathlete out. MAYBE. without being so concerned about milking me and my insurance company.

I tell you this. IF THERE was no insurance companies out there... Medical Treatment would be affordable because the outrageous prices would be slashed since no one could afford it. I mean I called a Urgent Care place... My girlfriend had a Sore throat/Strep .. I asked them how much it would cost first they said ..Do you have insurance... I said no. They then said " we don't give prices over the phone" click.

SCAM SCAM SCAM.

I feel you, dude. My bro in law is a Pediatrician. He's forced to do things and charge certain prices by medicare and the insurance companies. Universal health care? Not needed, just get rid of insurance, and the inflated prices being charged to the insurance companies come down, making health care vastly more affordable. It is a scam, and yes, we all pay for it.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I think the root cause of the "scam" has more to do with how much insurance the doctors need to be comfortable practicing. In the current time of the "get rich quick" lawsuit, doctors are getting malpractice suits thrown at them more often than they deserve. I actually feel for the doctors. It's all the other crap involved in the industry that piles up the costs. Well that, and medical equipment is expensive

my wifey has had to use the albuterol during the cold months. It seems to work, but she prefers not to use it due to it feeling "weird." I don't know what quantifies it as "weird" to her though.

I have had asthma all my 65 years. During that time I have used every kind of pill, injection, humidiifier, inhaler, and even smoked a certain kind of special cigarettes once that was supposed to help relieve asthma.
Nothing has had results for me like the alburetol (sp?) medihaler. But, it can make you feel weird and I am not sure how good it is for my heart. I used it for years though and have ran more than a dozen marathons with the medihaler in one hand. During the past 5-10 years I was prescribed Singular, a little pill I take at bedtime. It controls the asthma pretty good and I use the medihaler now infrequently on an as needed basis. That has worked for me. And, I really don't watch environmental stressors as closely as I once did.
Asthma is a real pain...I hope you can find the answer that will hep you .
