T1 advice
On sprint distances I'll go barefoot for the bike and the run. Anything greater I like to have a towel or two laid out ready to dry my feet.
Gotta lose that head fat.
Yeah I have towels ready at my transition spot and try and dry my feet off but it still seems so tough to put socks on, maybe i'm rushing through and not really drying them.. idk. Is a sub minute T1 just not too realistic?
Many Tri shoes will have a drain for wet feet, they may or may not be functional though...I wear a pair of pearl izumis that I train in without socks, often on 3+ hour rides. I suppose its also a matter of preference
I think that putting the socks on in T2 is easier. I find my feet have dried out after the cycle and the socks roll on quickly. I takes about 10 seconds for me to roll on both socks is you have the socks pre- prepared and set up. I'm not fast enough to worry about 10seconds- are you?

Same thing with me. Cycling without socks isnt that big of a deal, but if i'm doing a run over 10k, i'll put a pair of socks on in T2. My first triathlon i put socks on in T1 and my transition times were 2:02 and 1:59. My second one (i didnt put socks on ever), my times were 33 and 35 seconds. But i got a huge bloodblister that popped halfway into the 10k. Ill probably wear socks from now on haha.

As soon as I get my wetsuit off I'm standing on a towl and I rub my feet against it as I put on my helmet. My feet are mostly dry at this point and I've had good success with getting my socks on.

I dont wear socks for anything Olympic or below. In all reality if you are wearing a wetsuit and the T area isnt too far from the water exit a 1:30 is a really good T1 time, without a wetsuit a minute is very realistic, both of these pending if you have your shoes on your pedals prior to the start and also how transition is set up. Pros and Elite can drop that time significantly but for the AG'ers these are great times. Just takes practice, thats what living rooms are for =)
pre-roll them and unroll them onto your feet in T2
pre-roll them and unroll them onto your feet in T2
for my first tri, I did this and hung the bit of toe left on my grips, had a towel on the groud, and an extra draped on my handlebars.
in T1, I stepped on the towel, grabbed the socks and other towel while reaching down, gave the top of my feet a quick rub, and rolled on the socks. and, the transition area was in sand and dirt. still, this method worked well.

Sprint and most Olys I go without socks (depends on weather, especially if raining I'll wear double-layer socks like Wrightsocks to cut down on blisters). HIM and IM definitely socks!
I do the roll method too. All you have to do is stick your toes into 'em and roll them the rest of the way up. Make sure any dirt or grass is knocked off, but I don't worry about drying them much.

In transition I have a small bucket with water and a foot towel.
I run up to my spot step in the water and step on the towel.
I am not completely dry but I put on my socks which are rolled up.
They are going to wick the moisture off my feet anyway.
I put my bike shoes on and run out off transition with my bike.
'Nothing to it, but to do it!'
I have a small hang towel for a quick wipe if necessry, but its usually not. I put baby powder in my bike shoes pre-race. Helps adsorb some of the water. Having tri specific shoes is real nice, with drain holes and ventilation to dry the feet out real quick.
I Dont wear socks un the run unless its freezing cold out (doesnt happen here often) or its a long race. Having race flats helps with this. Find a nice shoes with a smooth seam free interior or lining to help reduce blisters. Then use vaseline in the spots that DO rub. Trial and error. If you do use socks, put them on pre race, then roll them off, makes it easier getting them on. Socks should take but 5 secs to put on if rolled, but that 5 secs i wont sacrifice in a sprint or oly.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
First of all, if yu train without socks prior to your A competition, you can compete without them. For anything above olympic distance, put socks on. For the others, train before hand and you will be fine. socks are TRASINTION killers. hahaha.

I use two pairs of socks, one dries me feet and the other goes right on. Maybe throw some powder in your socks before hand to help soak up the moisture.

Here's my classic rookie mistake: My first race a couple years ago, I used Injinji toe socks in T1. If you're not familiar with them, they have little pockets for each of your five toes. While these socks are fantastic for running, I was a complete moron for trying to use them with wet feet. It took FOREVER.
If it helps, I held a contest a while back where readers submitted their favorite T1 & T2 tips. You can look at them here:

my socks go on in T2 unless it's really cold out
Don't be so easy on yourself 'cause this one might be all that you have left
I just started a little over a year ago and have found running without socks works best for me. I'm pretty competative in my division and seconds count.
Want a fast T1? Race only in a speedo and forget the shoes along with the socks; real men go barefoot. For a fast T2, run barefoot too.

Seriously though, I'm only competitive with myself and it's not the transitions that slow me down ![]()

Taper Naked

When coming out of the water it usually takes me forever to put my socks on before I ride, obviously from wet feet. I have trained riding the bike with no socks on and it is fine, no big deal. My question is, is it smarter to cycle barefoot then put socks on during T2 or is there a technique out of the water that will help with putting on socks? T1 is usually my longest transition time and i'm trying to cut that down. Thanks in advance!!
