if you were to have just one which would it be
Go for a road bike to start with, much more comfortable and easier to get a feel for. Get a nice road bike that will last you a while and then after a season or two competing on it, go for a tri bike.
Note: I am a broke college student
I am also a broke college student so that helps a lot.
A road bike is MUCH more versatile. Unless ALL you do is tris get a road bike. In fact, you can't even ride a TT bike in road races. If you ever decide to jump in on a ride with a local cycling club, community race, etc you probably can't ride a TT bike. I'd say get a road bike now, TT bike once you've got to the point where your doing longer races or you can afford two bikes a road bike with clip on bars is plenty.
Just starting out, get a used roadie. A tri specific bike is very nice, and I love mine to death, but I also enjoy my roadie. A road bike will not slow you down much (if at all) especially at the shorter distances, and even more so with you being a new rider. It takes a while to build bike specific fitness. Used roadies go for a lot cheaper than used tri bikes, so as a broke college student, that is a huge advantage.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
ok so I'm going to search around for a used road bike, the only place i can think of to look is ebay. any other good classifieds to search through?
There is craiglist, the classifieds forum here, and these two:

also, if there is a university cycling team in your area, ask someone to spam it for you. I've had good luck bleading used gear from the team I used to ride for. Typically it isn't trashed either.

This past season i was fortunate enough to borrow a bike for the races I did but now I am in the market to buy a bike. I am not sure if I should buy a tri specific bike or get a road bike. So my question is if there was one bike to have which is better? I most likely down the road will have another bike.
