Sore and Swollen Fingers - Tips?
snapdragon posted 1 year ago.
Interesting topic! My fingers swell up too. Sometimes it's weather related, but also related to long distance. If it is bothering me, I'll raise my hands up above my head for a minute, and feel the blood flow back down. It does look weird, but it helps. I'll also make a fist with my fingers and open and shut it quickly.

A couple people I know have mentioned to me that their fingers swell and get a little sore after longer distance walking. Generally once they hit 8 to 12 miles.
I did a quick search and read that it can be caused by a few things:
1. Not enough water.
2. Too much water compared to electrolytes.
3. Arms swinging forces fluid into the hands - its just fluid retention.
The best I could find as far as tips go is to regularly wiggle the fingers. The two told me that they drink "plenty" of water before and during their walk, and they tried Gatorade for electrolyte replacement.
I'm wondering if maybe one of those mix-in electrolytes (fluid or powder) may be a better source (I'm not a fan of Gatorade, personally), or if they are drinking too much water.
Any other ideas on causes? More importantly, any ideas on prevention of the swelling?
Thanks again,
