Wetsuit or Trisuit
everything that Kylie said is 100% right on, and if the water is cold enough that you need a wetsuit then it doesn't matter how much they cost, you need one or you can't race. Some places will let you rent wetsuits and ifyou decide to buy then they put that money toward buying a suit (a good option). About trisuits, I'd say it's a must have (one or two piece, I don't care). I'd get the trisuit first. if that means you don't have a wetsuit for a race or two then so be it (but you might have to skip the race).
You can also rent a wetsuit for your race day from a place like http://www.wetsuitrentals.com.
A trisuit can be worn in the pool, but like other tri clothing the chlorine will make it break down faster. Generally I try to only occasionally use my race clothes to keep them lasting longer. However, I do wear them enough so that I know they will be comfortable on race day. So it is ok to try a trisuit in the pool, but it shouldn't be your main swim wear.
Wetsuits should be on sale this time of year, the same with clothes, since the new product lines come out.
Brands are very personal since they all fit a bit differently. I like the quality of the desoto gear, and I like my QR wetsuit. The BlueSeventy and XTerra wetsuits are great as well. Those four are the ones I know the most about, and I'd recommend any of them. It is really best if you can find a place and try them on and see what you like. They will fit snug, that is the point, but have a different feel in the shoulders, chest, etc.

Thanks a lot. I will be looking at both wetsuits and speedsuits and see how much different it is. it looks like wetsuits are very expensive if I want both top and bottom (>$300) so renting it might be worth it for the moment.
looks like my local store is selling some rental suits (orca) for $99. Is that a good brand? What should I look for when buying a used wetsuit?
Thanks
Orca are decent wetsuits IF they fit you. Definitely go to the store and try them on. Since they are used rental wetsuits, the store should probably let you take a couple to the pool.
Wetsuits should fit very tight when dry, and loosen up slightly once you are in the water. You don't want bagging of material at the armpits or small of your back. Once in the pool, some water should get in the suit. But if water is freely gushing in, the suit is likely too big.
When you try them on: 1. put bodyglide around your ankles, wrists, behind your knees and on your neck. Put on the suit one leg at a time and pull it as high and tight as you can up your waist before putting your arms in (it should fit snug to the crotch). Work the sleeves gently up to maximize room in the shoulders. DO NOT use your fingernails for any of this because you can gouge the suit easily. You may need a buddy to pull up the zipper, depending on fit/flexibility. To remove the suit, pull the zipper down and roll it off your arms, torso and legs (the suit should be inside-out once it is off).
Things to look for with a used suit: Avoid suits that are ripped or gouged. Make sure the zipper moves freely.
Oh, and save your money on trisuit/speedsuit and just get a good pair of tri shorts and maybe a jersey. Shorts are much less expensive, and much easier to make a pit stop if you have to.

Hi,
I am a big runner and biker and I got into swimming a year ago. I am planning on doing my first outdoor triathlon next Summer. I have also done a few indoor triathlon.
The water is super cold. So I am thinking about getting a wetsuit. But I would also like to get a trisuit /speedsuit for transition. But right now, I am short on money so I am thinking about getting only one of these items for Christmas.
My question is which one should I get? The wetsuit which I will only used next summer or the tri suit which I could use for indoor events and maybe during my run/bike. Also, can you use trisuit in swimming pool?
Also, what brand/model would you suggest me? And maybe Christmas isn't a good time in term of sales, when should I get it?
Thanks,
PS: i did look around the forum and I am thinking about getting either a T1 de soto or a tri suit liftfoil desoto.
Thanks
