anybody have a particular opinion on tri teams? anyone in NYC know Terrier Tri?
Keeping in mind you asked for opinions and experiences, I have found that cycling with cycling teams (roadies who care about UCI/USCF not USAT), running with runners, and swimming with a masters group is more beneficial than training with a tri group. One-sport only groups - IMHO - tend to be faster on average because they are dedicated to one event only. As such, training with people faster than you usually means you will get faster. Just my experience.
Kinda going off what TriSooner said, some tri teams have people in there clubs who are very good at one sport or the other who will lead team training sessions or give advice but for the most part the team aspect of it is a comradery thing for races, travel and what not. My team, Team Cadence, out of Saline Mi, has a couple different groups within that team that do track workouts together with an actual coach, riding groups, running groups, but not an actual classroom setting. I love what my 'team' offers in terms of support and competition, but if you want to get all out faster you need to get in with some actual master specific type groups or just find some people to train with who are faster then you are.
yep to everything they said. The tri club I train with is affiliated with the local masters swim group, "wind drinkers" running club" and community cycling club. The Tri bums just float from group to group and everyone knows to not expect us to show up to every group swim/bike/run. I think it is important to train with a tri group to some extent however. Practicing butterfly will probably not help your tri much, same with racing a bunch of crits or training the 400m hurdles. At a certain point every year the tri group tends to pull away from the other groups and focus on tri specific task. Lastly, make sure you know how to push yourself without anyone else around. It is a real possibility that you might find yourself in a race with no one around and you'll still need to be going hard. Train like you race because you'll race like you trained.

I'm looking for some info on tri teams; good/bad experiences, pros/cons sort of thing. I've always been really good about self motivating, i'm just wondering if people find it useful or appealing.
I was at the gym the other day and noticed that this team 'Terrier Tri' practices in the pool there and sponsor's one of the spin classes. Anyone heard of, seen, or dealt with them (or maybe is one of them)?
