appetite suddenly went out of control

My appetite has surged in the last month. I crave random things and desire more and more food.

I thought it might have been triggered by a deficiency so I started taking a multivitamin supplement. This doesn't seem to have curbed my appetite however.

I used to have a pretty moderate appetite. I would eat small portions and be satisfied. My daily activity level has not drastically changed. I work out an hour a day on weekdays.

Anyone else go through something weird like this? I don't think I'm pregnant because I'm a guy. I've gained about 3 lbs and I would prefer to not keep going in that direction.

I'm no doctor, but could it be a seasonal thing?

"Some people experience a serious mood change when the seasons change. They may sleep too much, have little energy, and crave sweets and starchy foods. "

Your not kidding, hunger has been out of control the last two weeks... And all I want to eat is buffalo sauce, lol. Cant figure it out! At first I thought it was because of sales quarter end, but thats over now. Maybe I just need to get back into serious training mode

Agree with PJT - although being in California makes it a little less likely. Have you had a change in your lifestyle/job to be indoors more?

If it is SAD (seasonal affective disorder) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seasonal_affective_disorder and you are craving those starchy foods/sweet things see if you can get yourself some good sunshine hours around midday in the fall/winter months - take a packed lunch and go for a walk outside. I have had to resort to using a SAD light that emits 10,000 lux at 18" distance away, for half an hour in the mornings ....I live in northern Canadian climes, so our days are considerably shorter by mid-October and that's when it usually hits. Often you want to sleep more too.

On the other hand, unrelated to SAD season, when I conscientiously decided to follow the new Canada Foodguide http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/order-commander/eating_w... and get in my 7-10 servings of fruit and veges a day, I didn't have time for those starchy things! because instead of snacking on cookies, chips and bread I made myself start on the baby carrots and chopped up green peppers, fresh pineapple, dried cranberries or nuts etc BEFORE i had the usual stuff - it's amazing how virtuous I feel and I had less room for the other! (You won't need that multivit either!) You may have to prepare it the day before though so that's handy. Bananas are a great ready-to-eat snack too.

Do you eat a good breakfast?
The old tried and true: "Have a good breakfast" to start off your day. Make sure you get some fat and protein with each meal because if you stick to low fat stuff it is usually loaded with carbs - and then you get a rebound hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and feel hungry in a couple of hours. The protein and fats take longer to digest. Somehow once I start on the sugary things, I crave more - it's probably physiologic: a huge insulin burst to cope with the sugar, means blood sugar suddenly drops, prompting body to tell you you need more~!

Good luck with it!

Only a suggestion, but it you stick with mostly fruit and veggies, you almost can't overeat.

Are you getting enough sleep? I recall a study that showed inadequate sleep supresses the production of hormones that regulate appetite (see, for example: http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=535424). Anyway, if your appetite increase coincides with a period of increased stress and reduced sleep, this may be a cause.

I have taken this passed month off to get completely rid of an injury thats been pestering me since may and have taken the liberty to EAAATTTT!!! My GF was laughing at me last night because I have a little belly on me now, something that doesnt happen when Im training. She poked it and said, "I dont get to do that until Halloween next year." Change in season, change in training etc. can all add to different eating habits. Once you start your training for next season or get back into a more steady workout program your 'A' traits will naturally get you back to eating right so you get the most out of your workouts. Good Luck!

Lots of interesting ideas. Are you recovering from a race by any chance?

I've noticed too that the more junk I eat (sweets, pasta, bread, etc.) the more I crave it. So I really try to stay away from those foods altogether, or eat small portions early in the day.

There are days I just feel like eating more than usual, but I usually run a little more or stay a little longer at the gym.
I usually get back in my groove the next day. It happens, just don't let it happen too many days in a row.

I get hit by seasonal changes in the fall and winter. Not seeing the sun depresses me. Get outside and get some sunlight!

It might be seasonal. Nothing else has changed - my sleep patterns are fairly unchanged, my job stress fluctuates but it's not anywhere the top of the chart. My season has been over since mid September so I'm not really in race-mode, mentally speaking.

I do notice missing the sun early in the morning and late at night so maybe that's it. I loved being able to see the sun up in the sky at 6am and still have daylight at 8pm during the summer. I miss that the most. I don't like the darkness at 6am or at 6pm. I'm noticing that I crave sweeter foods which is unusual for me because I prefer salty things and rarely eat dessert. I've been eating fresh fruit which seems to be working.

I've found myself in love, in a big way, with salad. I know that there isn't much to it but some fiber and vitamins but I am eating tons of it. Other than that I am probably eating on average less than I did this summer because my hours are slightly less. I say it's not race season, put on a few pounds to keep you warm on the ski hill and drop them on the other side of the winter.
