How fast was he moving to get that limb stabbed that far through his leg?

Ouch!! That had to hurt.
You know he was heavily medicated in the picture of him smiling in the hospital bed giving the peace sign.

i wouldn't wish that on anyone!

some of the comments claimed photoshop hoax, but, as unbelievable as it is [dull stick poked that far in], I think the complexity of the backgrounds makes it real enough

I'd almost have to guess a photoshop too. It looks like an almost perfect punture... what about all them knobbs and stuff on the branch? That and his leg would be swollen as all get-out. I'm calling B/S on this one.

I'm skeptical too.
While they may have cut the thin end for transportation resulting in a clean stubby end, I think there would be more torn flesh & blood on the narrow part from passing through his leg. It looks as clean as the other side. Surely that can't be?

sure if it was pointy, depending on how it fell off the tree (as if it pealed off the tree, you know as it broke) then it would be just like shoving a knife through your leg. It looks pretty authentic. Swelling wouldn't probably occure immediately like with any impalement, it would come AFTER it is removed (and reach peak within 24 hours).

Okay, we need some professinal medical opinions here. Now, where's Toni?

btw, what other EMTs, DR.s, LPNs do we have here at trifuel?

Either this is one hell of a hoax and this guy has some serious connections in an ER. Or this is just the freakiest accident we've ever seen. As hard as it is to comprehend, he does have the +2 on his foot and an IV in his hand. I just can't believe how clean the exit wound is and that the stick actually was pushed through about 2 feet!!!

There ya go.. the voice of authority!

I too, noticed the lack of blood/tissue on the "dirty" end of the stick.

Thank God, it's not real!

Biomedical Engineering student. This looks totally fake to me.
1) Where is the blood on the rest of the stick?
2) Someone's bike tire kicked up a stick of that size with enough force to lodge it THAT FAR into someone's flesh? Impossible. I could get into conservation of momentum and such, but suffice to say that a stick of that size would need a wheel rotating incredibly fast to propel it with enough momentum to lodge into someone's flesh.
3) Etc.

Hard days hard, easy days easy.

I am not sure about the force to get the stick thru his leg but the story does say they cut some of the stick off.
Maybe the other end was very pointy and sharp.
Maybe when they cleaned up the wound they cleaned off the blood on the stick?

Maybe??

That's rough wood. You can't clean it up that well!
'sides, why would they bother?
Nah, it'd be covered in goop: blood, flesh, skin.

btw, I posted after Franco. Have ya' noticed that the site software puts a post at the end after you edit something?
It sort of makes a mockery of order, especially if you are commenting on someone's previous post.

This was over on ST a while ago -- posted by a guy in the same cycling club. Who took some of the pics (and is a doc). I've met the guy who posted it over there, so I'm inclined to think it is real. Apparently the guy is now on crutches and eager to get cycling again!

That just shows that truth is stranger than fiction yet again.

Sure fooled me. Poor guy.

Going shopping now to get me a pair of single-track shin guards with kevlar knee protectors.

I looked at the pix again and it does look like there is some blood on the branch.

Maybe I should get some motocross body armor too ;-)

It could be real. That branch would have to have been moving a lot faster relative to the biker than I would think possible for that kind of injury to happen, but like PoC said: truth stranger than fiction.

i thought it plausible not in the branch shooting into the body, but the body's inertia into the stick if the stick got wedged solid against something.

When I saw it, I figured the only way that had happened is that the branch had somehow jammed into the ground on the back end and the momentum of the guy moving on his bike was what could have driven it through his leg.

I feel for him for sure - that's a terrible end to a ride.
