Which books about ultra marathons do you suggest? I'm not sure if I'm looking for inspirational stories, or training guides. Both sound like good reads.

Maybe books similar to My Life on the Run by Bart Yasso. I have not read it, but it appears to touch on ultras, but be mostly about running and his stories in general. Also, I'm avoiding Dean Karnazes for now.

Good idea, his books always seem to be less about running and more about how much better than you he is. This should get you started. Scott Jurek is the current a$$-kicker at the western states 100.

I've read parts of Running through the Wall -- might be worth checking out. It's a collection of stories of ultras, and I find those can sometimes have great tips for training along with a dose of inspiration :)

Pam Reed (Badwater Champ) has a book out called "The Extra Mile". I have not read it, but it has good reviews. I can personally recommend "Running Through the Wall": Personal Encounters with the Ultramarathon by Neal Jamison. It is basically a compilation of detailed race reports from all of the big (and small) ultras. It's a really fun, informative and inspirational read.

I am reading "the extra mile" by Pam Reed right now. It is pretty good, hope to knock it out on the trip to Maui this week for Xterra Worlds :)

I will admit though, Dean Karnazes' "ultramarathon man" was better than this has been so far. I didn't get the "I am better than you feeling" reading his book like some here post about...but that's just me.

"If one can stick to the training throughout many long years, that willpower is no longer a problem. It's Raining? That doesn't matter. I am tired? That's beside the point. It's simply just that I have to."

Don't get me started on DK!
"To the Edge" by Kirk Johnson...about Badwater 135
Look at "Long Distance" by Bill McKibben. About training to become a long distance Cross country skier and about lessons in life...very applicable.
Really, the best place to read about Ultras is to go to Ultra websites and read race reports that folks post...they give a much better insight than a commercially produced book., although I like Pams...
There was a great article in the Washington Post last year about "The Barkley"...a 100 mile ultra so tough only two or three folks have ever finished it.
The best source for Info about ultras...go talk to serious ultra runners, ask question, listen to stories...

I recommend getting a copy of "A Step Beyond: A Definitive Guide to Ultrarunning." This is a 500+ page compilation of articles from ultrarunning magazine and covers the entire spectrum (from race reports to training articles, etc). You can buy a copy for $20 here:
