Hi
I am 17 and would like some advice.
Background: I just started running for my school Cross Country team in September. A new teacher at my school started a Tri Club and i joined. I have been training since January for the Wildflower Triathlon in May 1, olympic distance. I am also doing track right now.I run about 25-30 mpw

Questions: Would it be possible for me to compete in a marathon in June or should I wait? (I will be doing a 20k race in 2 weeks.)

Bigger If.... Should I do Ironman Nz next March? Would it be possible to train for an Ironman in about 8 months with more serious training than what I am doing?

Thanks for any advice, Todd

Hi!

Why hurry?
Do you want just to finish or have a good time? And you should have at least 4-5 long runs (25-32km) done before the marathon day. Marathon is pure pleasure, if you are ready for it.

And if you race 20k and it goes well, you don't have a long way to go... Only need those long runs at slow pace...what is your goal time/heartrate for that 20km?

No comments on that ironman, i'll leave that for the experienced :-)

hi, thanks for the reply. I expect to get around 1:45 for the 20k. It has like 1500ft of climbing and it is on trails, so i hope I factored in enough time for that. I would like to finish the marathon and have a good time doing it. I will see after my 20k if I can go distance. thanks, Todd

Shoot for a 1/2 Ironman first. It sounds like you have the run down, where are you with swimming and biking? Once you have a 1/2 Ironman under your belt, you'll have a better grasp of what is required to finish a full distance IM.

yeah, doing a half-ironman sounds smarter than jumping straight from olympic to Ironman. I swim 2-3 times per week between 1600-2000m each time. i bike on the weekends and do 1 or 2 group cycling classes per week. Are group cycling classes an ok substitute for not riding outside? thanks, Todd
