Steelhead = August 1st (considering)
My first IM = Sept 7th (registered)

Dumb call?

I'm figuring 5 weeks out from my first IM it'd be fun to do one helluva peak weekend tune and add another HIM to the list before the Big DOWG in Sept. I guess I have a few questions;

a) Is this a dumb thing (remember I'm practically a noob)
b) If you've done it, what did you think?

I think five weeks is OK if you treat Steelhead like a training day (don't even wear a watch). You don't want to lose training time to recover after Steelhead because you still have three hard weeks and two taper weeks before IM.

I save the gas for the big show. You just never know what can happen on race day training and nutrition wise, not to mention injuries. If the IM is really important....skip the HIM. Folks do it all the time with no problems. I do it. But as this is your first IM, I'd err on the side of caution.
If you do go ahead...follow Sooners advice and leave the watch at home, just have fun and DON'T go hard. Some folks do go to events with the intention of lollygagging it but then they get caught in the moment and the next thing you know they've set a PR AND trashed their "A" race hopes.

If you do decide to do it...I can yell at you to slow down when you pass me on the course

On second thought, I think you'd get more out of winter marathons and early Spring stage races than doing Steelhead. IMHO. Doing both isn't dumb, but finishing a half isn't really necessary to prove to yourself that you can finish a full. (The inverse is also true: Finishing 70.3 isn't the same as 140.6). I mean, if Steelhead is in your backyard and it isn't a big ordeal to get there, then go for it and decide to finish BOP.

Here's my 2009. I live in MN. Its getting cold already. I have a marathon this weekend, afterwards I'm planning on hitting up the periodization method until my first race of the year (maybe a few 5-10ks in there for fun) at Oceanside 70.3. Then a few Oly's in there, 1 marathon, possibly Steelhead and then... the big dog. Steelhead is some 500miles away and i'd be driving so perhaps I should stay in town or drive to madison (<300miles) and ride the course instead.

So many decisions.

Check out your training plan. Some plans still have some seriously long training bikes or runs scheduled that weekend if you're doing IMWI in September. For me, I would rather be training at IM distance/pace/nutrition than racing a half (or trying to do both) that late in the game. Late June will be my 1st, and probably only, half next year.

Yeah, you're probly right. I have a habit of jumpin in before testing the water. I should focus on my IM and forget everything else. Getting crazy with the scheduling happens after the first one.

it's one he!! of a long drive from MN, let me tell you... i did it this past year and while it was nice that we rotated in the car it was still a long drive. the race was good, bummer it was a Du and not a Tri this year. only complaint was too many participants, bike traffic and drafting. next year the race will be about 700 people less because of new parking lot at race site.

save the money, do the Chisago 1/2. it has some nice rollers and it's close, oh yeah, much cheaper entry fee and doesn't take over 10 hours to get to. the race is 4 to 5 weeks out, so that fits. again, just use it as a training day to go through the motions, don't race it hard to the point were you might get injured.

People race like that? Man... I'm worthless. Thanks for the tip.

On the pro side, and as I've touted elsewhere, Steelhead is an awesome race.
