bye bye bike
OUCH! Make sure ALL your LBS get the word...Did you have the serial number? Photos? Let the local...ask everyone you know to keep an eye out. When someone gets burgled, it's usually by someone from close by....keep an eye out for bikes that look like your with really bad paint jobs!
Oh...sorry about the laptop too...

Bummer, sorry to hear that!
Don't know the details on your bike, but the serial # is a good thing to have. Check to see if your local police has a bike impound or if there is one in the area. I would check there in a few weeks to see if it shows up there.

The sad thing is they have no idea what they've stolen and will probably pawn it for $50.
I keep leaving my bike out for someone to take, but they won't. Until they do, I don't think my wife will let me buy another one...
Glad that nobody was hurt or nothing irreplaceable was taken. Hopefully this was a one-time thing. The thought of someone entering your home is discomforting.
sorry to hear about your situation. i would def. let all bike shops in your area know as the idiots may try to attempt to sell it to a shop. at least you have an excuse to get a new CR1 Plasma!
When you watch Craigslist & eBay, be sure to see if anyone is selling the frame only and the parts separately. Apparently, thieves do this sometimes to try to avoid detection.
If you have any pawn shops nearby, you may want to inform them, too. Maybe even print up a flyer with a full description of the bike and distribute it to pawn shops and the LBS.
Did you have renter's insurance? If so, that might cover the loss.
in portland we have a stolen bike listing on www.bikeportland.org
i didn't find anything via a quick google, but nyc must have something similar, no?

So sorry to hear, homeowners should be able to help you with a new bike but I know nothing replaces your pride and joy. Hopefully youll be able to get back 'rolling' soon and Im glad to hear no one was hurt. Keep us all updated as things change.
Sorry to hear about the theft. Ebay and Craigs List are the top places to keep an eye out. Also, you live in an appartment. Keep an eye out around there. I'm in law enforcement and I've seen where people who live in the same building as you and know what your schedule is, commit the break in.

Do you have a full description of all the components etc. Wheels, component set, bars, seat, gear sizing, serial numbers etc.
I had a bike stolen two years ago and I had everything on my bike cataloged and fotunately some high res photo's. They caught the guy trying to sell on eBay by parting out the components, fortunately, the scrapes on the rear derailleur gave him away and we setup a sting to get him with the local police, who fortunately were tri geeks as well. He had the rest of the bike completely apart. Good news is was it was due for a clean anyway.
Pays to treat you ride like you car. Plenty of photo's and love, and they wont get stolen, but if they do you have the proof to show that they yours.
BTW, the guy got a slap on the wrist and set free.
Thanks for all the advice guys. I do have a few photos that I could print out if I had my computer... or my printer.... but that's another story. I've notified all the LBS's and pawnshops, etc. My girlfriend actually knows more about the bike than I do so she's scouring the web ( I can't access ebay or craig's list with my work firewall). I think this afternoon I'm going to check out the local parks to see if someone stashed it around. I've heard of this happening a couple of times and at the very least it'll make me feel like I'm doing something.
Fortunately, I live in a two unit building with my landlord. Since we share a common entrance she's just as horrified by the break as I am and we're going to be getting a much beefier door/lock system, etc.
Also, thankfully all my races are done for the season. It's funny, I'm just plain angry someone stole my $1300 bike, but if someone had taken my $70 running shoes, I'd be hunting that mofo down right now with a rusty knife!
That's so shitty. Sorry to hear about your bike.
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...
What kind of scum steals a bike, honestly?
I've been locking my Cervélo to a parking meter outside my office during the day for 3 or 4 months now - with a u-bolt, but now you've made me re-think that plan.
I hope you get your bike back - in one piece.
cheers,

so sorry to hear about your loss...maybe a good excuse to upgrade?
So, last night my apartment was burglarized. Fortunately, no one was hurt and nothing irreplaceable was stolen. However, they did make off with my road bike and my laptop.Obviously, I've reported this to the police, make and model of the bike, etc. But other than keeping an eye on Craig's List and Ebay does anyone have any suggestions? I'm going to go to my LBS today and have them keep an eye out for it, one of the tires is flat.
Any other advice? If anyone is Brick-ing today, do a hill repeat for me and my fallen Scott!
I am sorry for your lost. I had a similiar situation, but it was the whole car two weeks prior to Lavaman and everything went! A month after the race I got a call from a sheriff and we were talking about what was in the car and he described my bike.. (at the time a softride) He took it to the station and I was able to recover the bike. He knew it owuld belong to someone. Sometimes a chance you can recover. (Thanks to coach and insurance money I was good to race!)

If my bike was in my stolen vehicle, I would make sure that the police new that my fully loaded $10,000 Cervelo P4 (or insert your lust bike here) was in the vehicle when it was stolen.

For many ins companies the bike would not be covered under your car insurance--would need to be home owners/renters .

You are right! It was the homeowners insurance. The contents of the car just over $3,000. The car '97 Pontaic Grand Prix Super Changer with 300,000 miles, so everything in the car was worth more then the car! I did manage to take the new running shoes I had bought that day out of the car. I wasn't ready to tell Scott I had bought another pair of shoes. TO this day nothing stays in the car.
So after a week here's the low down- The old door (we now have a new one) that lead into my building never really locked too well, so he just walked right in. My roommate appears to have forgotten to lock the front door to my apartment (he is now telling a story about how, sometimes it 'sounds like it locks' but doesn't) Either way, there is no sign of forced entry so no insurance would have covered it, had I had renter's insurance. Of course my roommate has been my best friend for the past decade of my life so it's not worth making a big deal over this. Again, it was only stuff, stuff with no sentimental value, and can easily be replaced with money.
He's taking a week off now and is spending this morning in the police department looking at mug shots (he got a very good look at the guy). They came and dusted (and found nothing) and are now scoping the local shops.
A reminder that I only just thought of a week late - if you have an iTunes account, don't save your password! Lord forbid you laptop get's stolen! CD's, TV show series and that 'I am Rich' iTunes application can lead to a lot of debt! Fortunately, it doesn't seem like they thought of it either.
In better news, my girlfriend and I killed some time in the LBS about a month ago and she turned to me in bed this morning and said "Well look at it this way! Now you can get that Scotty-O-Plasm bike you liked so much! With those cool metal shiny metal things too! Stephen's present for Stephen for Christmas, perhaps?".... god I love this girl.
If my wife rolled over and said the same works to me, I would be loving that girl too.
Well I'm glad it won't be an issue in your relationship with your friend. And I'm glad the girl understands :)
Maybe go on iTunes and change your password? Then the saved one will be no good. Or cancel the account? I don't use that site really ever, so I'm not sure how they work.
Yeah, I changed the password and deleted the saved card information. But I would never have remembered to do this if the cop hadn't reminded me, I suppose enough people have iTunes now that it's becoming an issue. Like downloading ringtones on a stolen cell phone.
