Another thread got me to thinking...

$1000 seems to be a number that people often pick for a price on a new road bike purchase. While I was looking for an alternative for the poster, I came across the Giant Defy2 which is an entry level road bike for $850-$950 depending on options.

What other new road bikes are out there in the $1000 range?

Felt F-85 - Alum. Frame, Carb. Fork and Seat Stays, FSA/105 Build Group $1070.00
Felt FW-35 - Alum.Frame/Carb. Fork and Seat Stays, FSA/Shimano 105 Build Group $1070.00
Felt Z-70 - Alum. Frame/Carb. Fork and Seat Stays, FSA Triple/Shimano 105 Build $1070.00

Trek 1.2W - Alum. Frame/ Carb. Fork, FSA/SRAM/Shimano Sora Build Group $880.00
Trek 1.2 - Same build group, just a mens frame
Trek 1.5 - Alum. Frame/Carb. Fork, SORA/Tiagra/FSA/SRAM Build Group $1100.00

Specialized Allez offers 3 different bikes with Aluminum Frames, Carbon Forks with SORA/Tiagra build groups with either Compact Double, Double, or Triple Cranksets for $880.00

Its just a small number of bikes but there is a lot of variety out there and all these manufacturers have great reputations.

if your looking to spend $1000 I think it's worth looking at the used market. Grab a bike mechanic type person from your local club and have them check out used bikes with you. Most bike mechanics accept beer as payment for services. A good source of used bikes is university message boards, especially if that university has a cycling team. Also, people who work at bike shops tend to go through bikes at an alarming rate aswell so it can't hurt to ask if they know of any used bikes on the market when your looking at new bikes.

I have plenty of bikes. What I'm trying to do is come up with a list of $1000 bikes so that there's a decent reference for those looking to get an entry level road bike.

Almost every single major brand offers a decent bike for $1k. So it depends on which one you like the most. Specialized, Cannondale, Trek, Felt, Kestrel, and Giant. Cervelo is the lone hold out there.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
