Broken pinkie toe-need a few thoughts
I had a very similar thing happen to me the night before a marathon. It was absolutely horrible. I got up the next morning hoping it was just a dream but it wasn't. I could barely put my sock on without wincing pain. My shoe felt like it was crushing my foot. After several minutes of lamans breathing I finally got my shoe on... it was horrible. I decided to run the marathon, and during the pain actually numbed my whole foot and I ran to a PR! However for the next 2 weeks I had to wear a sandal to work as any contact with my foot absolutely killed. I found I was walking in a manner which accomodated my pained foot but moving about in such a way caused me pain in my hips... it was a major mistake.
It took me almost a month for my toe to get better and my hips to stop hurting... I'd say to rest the thing.
But that's just one mans opinion.
Weary is the path that does not challenge.
Icing and elevating the foot will help reduce swelling and pain for simple fractures or heavily bruised toes. I'd take some time off, wait for the swelling to go down and ease back into training based on how it feels during a couple of easy runs. When I broke my 3rd toe I buddy taped it for runs, surgical tape and a cotton ball between 2 toes, to keep it stabilized. If you think it is broken, it's probably not a bad idea to see a doc and get an x-ray and discuss how much time you should take off for healing.

Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
This is one benefit of multi-sport: Work on the swim and bike (if you can) and hit the weights.
Thanks for your thoughts. Just needed to hear some voices of reason.
Yes I will be swimming a lot. I was just looking forward to the 10k thing b/c it's with a group that we all trained for this seasons tri's with.
I do agree stopping by the dr wouldn't be such a bad idea. However it's not really in my budget right now so I might wait just a few days and hope it'll get better.
Thanks again!
I would continue icing it and if you want to give it a try make sure you tape it up and take it easy.
Good luck!!
Nothing to it, but to do it
I have 2 broken toes from my days as a soccer player. My former coach is a podiatrist, and he always told me there is pretty much nothing to do for a broken toe. I would wait until the bone healed (crookedly) and then continue to do whatever - running, soccer, etc. I have some ugly toes, but they are still functional.
So, I would take some time off and let the bone heal if it is indeed fractured. I think you can (sometimes) tell a fracture from a bruise by tapping the end of your toe. If it hurts a lot, its probably fractured. If it hurts the same as when you press it other places, it might just be bruised.
Thats my two cents, take it for what its worth. Keep in mind I'm no doctor, just sharing my experience.
I broke my pinkie toe on a door frame -- OUCH!!! -- it hurt so bad. Nothing really to do, I just iced it, stayed off it for a coupla days and kept it buddy-taped to the toe next to it. Looks like it's time to hit the pool!

Hey Guys,
I have a quick question for you. First I just finished my first sprint tri this wkend and hope to post a race report soon. But after all of that I think I broke my pinkie toe last night-rushing to make it out for a run and that damn bedpost got me..again.
This time it hurt bad. Today my poor little toe looks like a sausage (more than normal) and is really bruised. So broke or not-who knows. I do know that a dr. can't really do much for it. I've been icing the poor guy on an off.
Tried to run last night-couldn't do it. Today just walking miserable. For such a little toe-it makes my whole foot hurt.
So-do I just let the days go by until it doesn't hurt? Would it be totally not smart to go for a light run when it hurts a little less. I start a 10k training program on Thursday and trying to figure out how to proceed from here.
Thanks for your thoughts!
