When to call it quits?
dumb question have you tried ice and anti-inflammatories? DON'T PANIC. it's tweaked but may not be broken. trying resting it and givign it a chance to mend before bailing out on the race.

I wouldn't do anything rash this early in your tri career. You've got time, race fees can be recovered or else it's a good donation to a great group of people, people always need vacations, etc. If your knee doesn't shape up give it time off. If your the sort of person who can go to a race and just take it easy and have fun then that might be an option (I am not one of those people). If your knee pain is muscle based, think about seeing a massage therapist. I had one take me from literally can't walk, or sit down in a chair (no joke) to easy light cycling in two days. I was doing back to back to back centuries on my bike and my quads weren't ready for that much stress and just knotted up.
To recap, don't give up yet, take it easy, and might just call this race a C due to training injury. Having this injury coming after a period of rest it sounds like it could just be soar muscles to me. I get very tight if I just punch out for a period of time without tapering down.
I am in agreement with jnrice, you need to check out physio and massage, plus a bit of rest. Since the money is spent, if you are able to go, I would go just for the experience of a second 70.3. That said, you don't need to ruin your knee in your first season. You still have three weeks and you have a good base of fitness I assume since you already finished one event this year. Seriously look into physio though, they may be able to do a couple of things that will get you back up sooner than you think. If that can't be done, you will know what is right to do even if it sucks - go and watch and enjoy a vacation at a race! We never get to watch these races anyway! Good luck and speedy recovery!
Lots of good advice above...Yes, it may be that this race may go down to "C" status...so what? It would still be good experience and it really is fun to take the watch off and just noodle a race.
The question you have to think about is this: Is this race worth the rest of my career? Racing hard on a questionable knee could cause problems you can't even imagine and lead to NO races next year, or the next...How long do you want to do this sport, or any sport for that matter? I meet folks all the time, young ones, who have blown out out a knee and now their exercise comes from poker.

Zagfan - were you sent to Baton Rouge because you are in the military?
Use that to your advantage, if you decide to postpone this race.
See your doctor, get the issue assessed. If it is something that you need to rest then ask your doctor for documentation.
Contact the Race Director, advise him you were sent to Baton Rouge to do your job and you were injured and request a deferment.
Play up your role in the military. You deserve it don't feel bad about it.
Contact the Hotel, Airline, and whoever else you laid out $$ for and let them know the situation.
The Hotel should not be too difficult. The airlines see if you can get a refund or possibly reschedule your flight, your wifes flight and your parents flight. They will probably charge you a fee but it is better than losing all your money.
Once again milk your role in the military and if you need to use the Doctors documentation.
Yes, a sob story ;-)
BTW- In the future when booking your flight, opt FOR the flight insurance so you can cancel your flight almost up to flight time, I think I paid $15 for mine this summer

I've iced and used anti-inflammatories. It usually feels better after a few days. I haven't done anything on it since Friday and today was the first day I could put pressure on it and it actually feels good. Problem is that's how it felt on Friday before I went on a run.
I'm not really the type to show up to a race and just take it easy, I tend to push myself. The second I have someone pass me on the bike or run I'll try to push it. I'm just a little too competitive. If it was a local race I would definitely just take the watch off and have fun. But knowing that my parents are flying to TX as well as friends driving down, yeah I'm pretty sure I would be pushing it.
I think Anton hit it on the head. Is this race worth the rest of my career? And no its not, I can look far enough in the future and realize that one race doesn't define me. I'm signed up for IMC 09 and that is my mega "A" race and I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize it.
I will also try and get as much money back or deferred as I can. I was in Baton Rouge on orders from NORTHCOM but that's not what injured my knee. I just don't think I eased back into it correctly. Good point on the flight insurance though, I'm kicking myself for not thinking about it.
Another wrench that has been thrown into the whole situation is that my landlord just informed us that he's facing foreclosure, so in the next 6 weeks we have to move out of our house, which means extra money and time for the move.
I appreciate all of the feedback, you guys bring up some good points. Triathlon doesn't just require endurance for the race but also for each season. I'm going to make sure that I'm healthy and ready for next season. I would hate to do permanent damage. Then I would end up just broke and out of shape, kind of like the Navy and Air Force :)

Hey, we're working on it. The base where I work just put on a tri. I also got ten people from my squadron (of 65) to run a half marathon with me in November.
Hope things work out with the knee. I understand the pressue of not wanting to let friends/family down.

I have to get a jab in on the AF and Navy anytime I can :) That's great that you got your squadron involved in the half marathon. There's actually a lot of AF invloved in tri here on base.

Hey Longtall,
Sorry these Army guys are always picking on the Air Force, and Navy, but the Marines were busy with some real PT. (LOL)

I'm not going to try to cover all the questions you ask, you're a big boy, but I can say this;
Something similar happened to me 12 days from IMC in 2006.
If you decide to do the race 3 weeks from now DO NOT run another step from now until race day.
rest up and heal.
Consider it just a longer taper. Rest, rehab, and so on, and finish the race as best you can. Chances are that if you rest from now until then that you will be able to enjoy the day.
Try to push it now and no good will come of it.
Wrap it with an Ace bandage before you start the run leg just to remind you that you are injured. You'll get lots of sympathy from the crowd too.
best of luck,

If it was me, I'd certainly have a doctor check it out. If there's a chance of causing more damage, then the decision is easy. If it's "just" pain and performance that are going to suffer, then you have a decision to make.
I was really worried about a foot injury I got one week before my marathon. It hurt so bad I was limping a lot when walking, and it was swollen. I was expecting the doctor to tell me to rest it and put ice on it. To my surprise, he showed me how to stretch it, told me to put heat on it, and said if it was too uncomfortable during running, to take ibuprofen. Most importantly, he assured me that I would not cause more damage by running.
Well, after all of the advice I ended up dropping the race. Not only do I have the knee issue but my landlord is facing foreclosure and I came home to a for sale sign in my front yard. So knowing that I wouldn't be at peak condition for the race and that I'm now going to spend more money moving into a different house I made the call to skip the race and focus on getting into the new house before the end of the month instead of waiting until after the race. I'm not exactly thrilled with the decision but life will go on. The sudden end to my race season will motivate me in the offseason to come back even stronger next year.
So instead of going on a long ride this Saturday I've got tickets to the Air Force/Utah football game and since I gave up beer this summer b/c of training I will have an ice cold 12 pack of Fat Tire to get me over the disappointment of not racing. But not to worry, Monday starts my offseason and I'm back to the grind.
Beads, we only make fun of the AF and Navy b/c it would just be stupid making fun of a Marine, kind of like those "Messing with Sasquatch" commercials.
And Longtall, we only make fun of the AF b/c we're jealous :)

Did you try and talk to the RD or the Airline to get some of your $$ back or get a deferment?
BTW- the only reason it would be fun to make fun of a Marine is because we might not get it, and go off and march somewhere, do pushups or clean our weapons ;-)

The rep from EnduroSports says she can get me at least a partial if not full refund. My wife was suppose to call the airlines today. Their website states a $150 transfer fee (on a $180 dollar ticket), but my parents got a retro active $100 fee since their tickets were purchased a while ago, so we'll see.
Funny thing is that the only triahletes I know at work are Marines (active and retired). Sometimes I wish I could do a branch transfer, I've found that I get a long with Marines more than any other branch.

Good luck on getting at least some of your money back, and I can't emphasize enough to get the flight insurance in the future. It would only cost you $15-20 to cancel or reschedule.
It is easy to get along with Marines, we are a simple folk; eat, drink, poop, pee, some sexy time, and physical challenges of course. (triathlon, running)

'Nothing to it, but to do it!'
This week I've had the exact same injury happen to me as well. It's so damn dissapointing. I took 3 days off of the running, let it feel good, then went out last night for a try. About 1 mile into it my the pain almost paralyzed me and I felt like taking a taxi home, a far cry from the 70 miles per week I've built myself up to.
The injury is just as you describe, and where you describe. Have you found anything helpful? I've researched it online/medical journals and it sounds to be caused from misalignment of the leg and foot, or, certain muscle deficiencies.
I just wonder how long this is going to keep me out of the game, if there are proven ways to heal faster, and how I will have to build back up to the lengths I was at. ::sigh::

So here's where I'm at. Training was going great, and then Hurricane Gustav hit the Gulf and I was sent to Baton Rouge, LA. So that was one week of training down the drain. I got back and went out for my usual Saturday morning brick but instead of the scheduled 3:15/:15, I went 2:30/:15. My body didn't feel exactly right for most of the ride but I figured it was just get use to being on the bike again after no long rides in two weeks. The next two days I got a little over 2 hours of running in and noticed my left knee was a little soar. Again, figured something was just inflamed and would work its way out like usual with stretching and foam roller. Well, went out for my usual Tuesday lunchtime 1hr ride and I could barely make it around the block. The pain is right above my left knee cap, possibly where my quad and knee cap meet. So for three days all I did was swim/stretch to see if it would get any better. On the fourth day (last Friday) I decided to test it out on a run. About 25 minutes into the run I could feel the sharp pain again, getting worse when I ran down hill. So again, I limped around and did nothing but swim.
So here I am, its been two and a half weeks of pretty much no training and I'm under three weeks out to Ironman 70.3 Longhorn. I'm afraid to even try to push the knee in fear of doing serious damage. My question is, at what point do I make the call on the race. Entry and plane tickets for my wife and I are paid for. My parents are flying down to Austin from Idaho and a friend from Dallas is driving down. So not only will I be forking out some dough for hotel, rental car, taking the bike on the plane, and food, so will my parents and friend.
What makes it worse is that this is my first tri season and only had two 70.3's on my schedule so after Longhorn I'm done. My goal for Boise 70.3 was to have fun and finish and I did exactly that. My goal for Longhorn was to actually go down there and race.
So after all of that explaining/complaining I need some opinions from fellow athletes. At what point has anyone pulled the plug on an "A" race and just moved on into the offseason? And if my knee can figure itself out this week, would two weeks be enough after being out of training for at least 3 weeks to salvage the race? If you've read this far into the post thanks for your time and even more, thanks for any advice.
