so today was my first go at the 70.3 distance, at the toyota challenge at creek (columbus ohio). i flatted two times in the first 3 miles and that was that. i am a little disappointed but i really love this sport and i don't look at the last few months as a loss at all. in fact, I think I may try again in two weeks, it'll be a 6 hour drive and another race fee, but i think that will be better than having this eat at me all winter.

unfortunately the plan I was (loosely) following does not take into account my situation. I am very well rested, my taper seemed to work but i really never got to find out. how do I best extend this for 14 more days? anyone have any experience with this?

You flatted two times in the first 3 miles and that was that. What do you mean by 'that is that'?

"that was that"
no more C02, no more tubes. i know i should have brought more, but i had not flatted in 1,500 miles.

i think maryland is way too far from bloomington IN, but i am thinking about atomic man near knoxville.

Wow, what bad luck! Two flats in 3 miles is freaky, especially after not having any in the previous 1500 miles. Do you know why you had 2 flats so suddenly? We're you using a different wheel set than you train with? Was the road full of sharp objects?

Did you overinflate? That happened to me in my first race. I hadn't had a flat in forever, and I blew out twice. Since it was so much cooler when I inflated my tires, they heated up and just popped when I was riding on them. Oh, and I'm also not exactly light, so that didn't help the situation.

Oh yeah, and that totally sucks. Sorry for your bad luck.

I think the focus was "how do I best extend this for 14 more days? anyone have any experience with this?"
-I personally would train in short, but hard, sessions this week and part of next week, then taper back 3 days before race day. If you've got a good base, you should be o.k. The taper has got you well rested and fully recovered. Don't do anything that will break you muscles down to where they cant fully recover before race day, but don't slack off so much that you lose your level of fitness. You will know what this point is.

same wheels, same pressure in the tires as the last 4 months, i really haven't the slightest clue. it was not that much warmer when i started the bike. thanks for the response warmachine, thats kinda what i was thinking too, now i just gotta find 2 more weeks in me. i was ready for this season to be over with but now i want revenge.

After almost being rained out of my tri event, I can understand flatting out being worse, and wanting a re-do instead of waiting until next year. I would think maybe a 20-30 mile bike with a 5-8 mile brick this coming weekend, just so you have confidence. Two weeks won't leave you too flat ... just think of your taper being extended. I'd caution about doing too hard of a workout, especially on the run, to prevent injury.

That does suck.
Somedays you are the windsheild, somedays you are the bug.

You were the bug this time.

Keep your head up and do some shorter training but keep up the intensity for a week then taper the week before the next race.

Good Luck!! ;-)
