Big News
First of all, CONGRATS...secondly...I'm still childless, but I'd say definately be ready to cut back...a baby is a lot of work for the both of you and she certainly won't appreciate the sherpa duties as much w/ the baby I'd imagine
My Sherpa isI am going to havehermy work cut out. Helping carrymy gearbaby stuff ANDa new babymy gear .
Fixed.
I would suggest cutting way back for this first year. We have 2 children 26 month old daughter and 3 1/2 month old son. Last year was my first year doing triathlons and this year wanted to add a couple more but as the year ended up was unable to do any events. Now that was probably a major cut but also didn't train for a number of other reasons, but my suggestion would think probably cutting that in half would be good
Congrats!
I'm just getting into this triathlon thing, but I can tell you how our 1st child effected my training for bicycling races, 5k and 10k runs/races. It just about cut my training time down by 1/3 at least, maybe in 1/2.
I am the great Cornholio! I need TeePee for my bunghole. Don't make my bunghole angry!

congratulations! prepare for life to change- BIG TIME! for the first few months (at least) life will revolve around the new mom and baby- you will (should) be the "sherpa"-b/t the stroller, diaper bag, breast pump, baby bjorn, and the whole other list of crap you have to take places for one little baby outing. And seeing how your baby is due at the beginning of the tri season, I would not hold my breath to be doing that many races. I would cut down a LOT. Maybe down to 3 races, one each summer month; ones that are closeby, b/c if you want your wife and baby to be there (for sherpa duties or cheering squad) it is not easy to have a newborn baby out and about, much less for hours on end.
it may seem somewhat dissappointing when you already have all these races on the schedule, but once your baby comes, you will have a new perspective and 10 races may seem a bit excessive...especially since you won't be getting any sleep
My daughter is 2 and a half and although I would love to do more than 4 races next year I just cant and dont have the time. I would say cut back until you know you can handle it. Your little one is going to be running the show for a long time now so he or she will dictate whether or not your current race schedule is too much.
Maybe try to coordinate paternity leave with your race schedule?
Maybe see if there are events that take place in the middle of the night?
I would plan on cutting way back on your race schedule.
Then with all the money you save on race fees get a jogging stroller and bike seat/trailer for when your baby is about 6 months old.
Take care of your sherpa/wife and baby first and worry about the events after that
Nothing to it, but to do it
Congratulations! My son is 1 1/2 years old now but last year he was a little thing and I needed to cut way back on training. I still was able to do 2 halfs and 3 sprints but it was done without any structured training. My wife ended up getting sick after our son was born so I had to do a lot more than I had planned, I had to put the tri thing on the back burner. Now that my son is a little older training is back to normal (for the most part) and picked back up on the races. The biggest thing I can tell you is you will not miss your training, enjoy the moments with your family and triathlons will alway be waiting for you when you and your family are ready.
Congratulations!
Ditto all on less training, fewer races. 10 races, holy crap!
I've only ever done tris with kids, so I don't know anything different. Mr. Groovy is my sherpa and kid wrangler and my 4.5 year old daughter (20 month old son still mostly oblivious) is my cheering section.
You'll be modeling an active lifestyle for your kiddo and that's a great thing.
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...
Congratulations!
When they are about 2 start working the longer workouts. First year is an adjustment, but you just do it!
Nah, keep your race schedule intact.
Your divorce lawyer can work out a visitation schedule that fits your training / race program.

Thanks everyone. My wife wants me to keep up my race schedule, but I'm sure her mind will change over the next 9 months. I worked my way through college at a day care, so I know what kids are all about, but it's much easier to deal with them for a few hours and then send them home then it is to raise them.
My Sherpa and I thank you for your responses ;)

Thanks again everyone. I've revised my schedule (that could change still depending on everything) but to make my 2009 training worth it, I've added a 70.3 in September. I'm looking forward to the challange ahead of me. I'm also excited about the 70.3.

Well the good news is that my wife is pregnant! (Finally, after 8 months of trying). Our due date is May 17th, the day of my first warm up race (a Du). Needless to say, I'm excited about our first child. Now I need to sit back down and redo my 2009 triathlon schedule.
Any suggestions as to the best way to handle my 2009 race season? Should I significantly cut back on my schedule (10 races, 3 are warm ups). Sould I keep it the same and wait to sign up until race day?
