Sinus Flare Up in the water
Nose Plugs?
Have you tried Antihistamines OTC?
Maybe some Clarityne D in the morning, or some Benadryl at night.
Lake water might be triggering a irritative allergic raction, so you might feel better with some antihistamines drugs. Try also washing your nosetrills with saline solution, a few drops on each side, and a good blow...and you´ll feel much better.
Hope this helps...have a great day!

His idea sounds better.....
Thanks. The best I have done is go with a salt warm water solution. Irrigate whenI get back ... but that has not improved my situation.
I do not like the idea of doing drugs.. even the benadryl gets me hyper. I may use the nose plugs but most likely will go with the full mask that covers the nasal passage.

I am with you on being away from medications, but I just would like to point out that you more than likely won´t need to use the OTC medication for the long run....just for a few weeks, until that irritative allergic reaction gets under control, after that you eventually be off the meds.
Diphenilhydramine (Benadryl) surely can cause that antagonic reaction in some people making you feel hyper and so on; but loratadine (Claritine D) is much more tolerable and won´t make you feel drowsy or hyper.
Either way I think giving the mask a shot is not half bad idea at all, but when all fails, a little help from modern chemistry won´t hurt. ;-)

I swim in a lake and have the exact same problem. I irrigate with the saline and take an allergy medacine with no success. I do not have the problem in the winter when I pool swim. Let me know if the full mask works.
I used to have this problem, and it is caused by a build up of the water in the sinuses, after the swim. The trick is to drain the sinus's after the race or swim. Usually, it starts draining on the bike portion after a Tri, but sometimes it wont.
Its a bit gross, but find something to lean over to support you middle, you will feel the pressure in your sinus's move, then start blowing. The water will start coming out pretty rapidly, and it may take a number of times leaning over to get it all out. Much like shaking up a carton of milk.
After I started doing this, I stopped having sinus issues after open water swims and triathlons.
Same as above poster - I get this issue at the pool sometimes. I feel stuffed up for a few hours with some pressure behind my eyes and around my cheeks and nose like I have a sinus infection... I recognize that what has happened is that water has collected in my sinuses. I tilt my head in a variety of angles - hang my head upside down, lie on my back and rotate my head, etc... until I hit the magic position and water will pour out like my head was a full teapot and my nose was the spout. Weird thing.
Great input guys.
I will go the cheap route for now. I have exactly the same symptoms as you have all discussed. I will tip and rotate my head in different angles in hope that the water discharges after the swim.
My second option is to go with the nose plugs and then move on to the full mask but absolutely zero medication. I will get back to you later and let you know how I faired.
Thanks again.
I get that sometimes. It is great for snot rockets!!
Nothing to it, but to do it
Did my swim and tipped my head and waited. Nothing! Not even a drible!
Went home and no symptoms. Looks like I got duped. LOL!
Anyways, I know what to do now as a first option when I get done with my swim.
Wow, this is enlightening. Last race I did, my nose emptied out halfway through the bike. Thought it was my allergies flaring up or something, and didn't think much of it.. Come to think of it, I do get stuffed up after I swim in the pool.

Hi Folks
Whenever I swim in the lake, I find that my sinus flares up. I develop a tremendous amount of mucous build up and have prolems breathing that evening. I feels ok when I am swimming but the aftermath. The next day it clears right up.
Just wandering if anyone has experienced or dealt with this. I am sure it has got to do with the aggrevation of the lining in my nostrils.
I am planning on buying a full mask that also covers my nose. I do not know how I will do with this but currently I am using a seal mask.
Thanks
