Blue book equivalent for used bikes?
not that I've found. i've always balanced what I want to get for the bike with how much I like the buyer. It's a flawed system (have one bike out there that I haven't been payed for because a friend of mine "doesn't have the money right now") but it works in the end.
Watch similar models on ebay for a few weeks & you'll get a feel for what you should pay. If he can wait until winter you'll score a better deal b/c not as many people will be looking.
now's the time of year to start looking at late model '08 bikes at your LBS. they'll be trying to offload them before the '09 bikes come in, so you can score a pretty good deal on a new ride rather than guessing and gambling on a used ride. I bought my '07 specialized about this time last year, less than 24 hours after it was built up by the shop. because they had already rolled out the '08 bikes, I got something in the ballpark of a 25% discount. late model items are usually negotiable because no one wants to hold outdated inventory.
With the increase in price on almost all models across the board for '09s, I found very limited selection in '08 models where '09s were out. I'd be fairly urgent in getting an '08 if bikes are at all in demand in your area.
i've always balanced what I want to get for the bike with how much I like the buyer.

There's usually another one in there too. Last week it was a fully built Merckx EXR.Kinda nice taking a leak with $6k in bikes and stacks of Velo News, in case you gotta take a seat. If only my house had similar decorum.

Is there such a thing? Or a website, reference, etc?
My husband has been looking at some used bikes and it is tough to know what is a fair valuation for some of this stuff.
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...
