A friend of mine was talking about USAT Rankings the other day. I went to look at rankings and it appears you have to participate in one of the "special" ranking events... or am I missing something?

Nope, you have to do 3 USAT races or something. USAT ranking pretty much means nothing.

+1 All it means is that you bought a membership and raced three of their sanctioned events in the same region in a given year. Big whoop. Non-sanctioned events (read: events that don't buy USAT's insurance) and Ironman don't count.

One thing that they are good for is guging your progress against the people that you race against all the time. USAT rankings are regional so you can see how people are doing year to year and how you rank against them. If you see the same names and see yourself moving up in the rakings then your doing well.

The rankings are also usefull if you have aspirations of being on the USA triathlon team.

To be honest, I can see my progress by looking where I place in the percentages of each race. Looking at their event list for getting ranked, I'm not even sure any of their events are near me.

It brings up the obvious duality in our sport.

Yes, but only if the same people race the requisite number of races year after year. A better guage is like what tsilcyc said: guage how you are progressing (or not progressing) against the rest of the field at any given race. I think another way is to do the same race every year and see if your own times improves.

Yes, but for < .01% of us.

dream and work

always race against your prior best!

Finishing the race is the only thing that validates the cause.

I was excited to see my ranking 3 years ago when I started. After I saw it I realized how little it meant to me. It is the same as where I place in a race compared to my time. Time is much more important to me then grabbing an award. I would rather put up a good time then win a race with a weaker field. Although the awards do feel good when they happen in combination with a good time.

Well, actually, youre ranking is sort of a reflection of your time. I really loathe explaining the whole thing, but basically what happens is youre time is turned into a percentage point/ score based theoretically on how the best racers WOULD have done if theyd been there.

This is why you tend to get lower scores at small to medium sixed events than you would at a much larger event with all the top racers actually there. My best scores the last few years were at races where I finished 3-5th in my AG. Some of my lowest scores were when I was 2nd and 1st. Its not exact, but it does seem to work fairly well.

I get what you are saying and I guess I should read the USAT description, but a question I have is how do they account for hybrid events and differences in courses. For example a "sprint" may be a 14 mile ride or an 18 mile ride with major climbs. The same run course may be 3.1 or 3.5 as well as differences in the swim distances. There are also some in between distance races.

The distances are weighted differently- there are bonuses and riders- like I said- its pretty in depth.
As far as variences within sprint courses and odd events like Escape from Alcatraz, distance really doesnt play a role. It is strictly a numbers game based on times and rankings (actually percentages) combined. The USAT mag puts out an issue at the start of the season describing the system in depth, and it does a fairly decent job of illustrating it.
