Spin classes in general.
I LOVE spinning, but my only complaint is that you don't know the mileage you have done (unless they have expensive bikes). I would use it as one of your workouts. You can do so much in a spin class...hills, intervals, cadence work, etc.
I've been pondernig the whole spin thing at my local Y too. I think that will definitely be an option once the days are getting so short that it is harder to ride.
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...
I love spinning, I ocassionally go into the spin room and make my own workout- the classes depend on the teacher. Some like climbing, some like speedwork, you have to find one you like
My gym closed so I went and joined the local "Y". Would have probably done so anyway as I need the "Y" for swimming in the winter. But at any rate, I noticed that they have a spinning class. What is everyones feel on using a 45 min spin class as a substitute for one of my 3 bike workouts that I try to get each week?
I own a spinner bike and keep it in the garage. In 2006, I tried to substitue spinning for cycling to avoid going out in the rain and cold. For me, it was a mistake and I won't do it again.

I love the spin bikes at our club. I also like having a group workout option inside in the winter.
Similar to a regular bike workout, it is up to you how hard you want to make it and what you want to get out of it.
Try a couple of classes with different teachers and then decide.

Spin classes are great for climbing. Sometimes I can't get out on my bike until after it's dark so spin is the perfect alternative.
Dave Scott teaches a spin class.
Spinning is good to supplement your bike workouts, and you can probably substitute a spin for a normal bike workout.
It does depend on your teacher.
Nothing to it, but to do it
Depends also on the workout you are substituting for -- if you can find one with similar goals as the spin class, I'd say it was fair to sub it. If you are subbing in an hour high intensity for your 3 hour long ride, I'd say it's not a fair trade. So find an equivalent workout and sub away :) If you are working with a coach, talk with him or her to figure out where spin classes best fit in your plan -- gotta remember the big picture as well as the smaller one :)
Spin classes rock...
I remember how I thought I was pretty good on a bike, until I had my butt handed to me in my first spin class!!! The instructor really put us through our paces, and showed me a new meaning to the term "limit". Where I thought was the limit was nothing... crank up the resistance and keep a high cadence, then crank it again, then again... and when you think you can't keep it up she'd come by and add another turn...
Sadist. :) Hope you're lucky to find a sadist too. :)

Awesome, I am in on the spin for Wed. mornings bright and early. I will try to post how it goes, won't make it this week as I have a race on Sat. if Hanna will stay away from the coast of Ga, and SC.
Can't wait to find the limit. Just haven't been able to punch it recently and need someone to give me a kick when I get to where I think my limit is.
I can't ride my bike during week days, and the trainer is too boring. I have been taking two consecutive 45 minutes spin classes twice a week for almost a year and I think it is great for intervals, climbing and sometimes tempo workouts.
After trying with a couple of teachers I decided to make a selection based on the music and the group. I don't really follow the teacher, except when warming up. I sit in the corner and do my own workouts. The teacher doesn't mind my not paying attention, as long as I am going harder than the rest. Everyone else makes fun of me, specially when I use my imaginary aerobar.
Try it I'm sure you will enjoy it. :)
However, if you can do 3 outdoor workouts on the bike, keep with it.
