Buckeye Challenge 1/2, Crash and Burn
Sorry to hear about the bad day GG, but you obviously made the right decision--You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em, Know when to walk away and know when to run.
Give em hell next year.

Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
Ouch. That reminds me that I need to find out what they have on the course at my first HIM and practice with it. Best of luck in the next one.
Tough lessons to learn, but glad you listened!!
You listened to the body. Even when we don't want to we have too!
that sounds aweful- so sorry- but you did the right thing- you now have more days to race...and you will do so wiser
Even a day as bad as that one has some merit...it reenforced some of the basic rules...
Glad you're ok. You did the smart thing.

Tough day, but smart racing.

Hey Yall,
Just got back from the Buckeye Challenge this evening, My first attempt at a 1/2 Iron Distance Duo. What a bad race for me... Starting Temps 80, Humidity 80+%.
Good First Run, right on pace, with a splash of water a the turn around, at T1, placed two snack sized baggies full of ice in my jersey before heading out.
Bad Things:
1) Launched a fuel bottle at 5 miles on the ride.
2) Picked up a bottle at an Aid Station with Heed in it (I love Hammer Products, so this wasn't bad, or so I thought!
3) At the 1/2 point of the ride, drank some Heed, and ate a Banana (Oh, Oh).
4( Began spewing Heed, Water and Banana at 51 miles, and 52, and 53.... I was sorely dehydrated, and really overheated, I had almost stopped sweating by T2.
5) Got to T2, and I was too loopy to find my shoes, ended up handing my bike to my wife, and with an escort to the Medics, spent an hour packed in ice...
So what did I do wrong you ask?
1) New water bottles
2) Picking up fuel that I had not mixed
3) Eating something that I had not brought
Why you ask? Just Stupid I guess, or caught up in the moment, I don't know...
What I did right.
1) Stopped when I did, I could have started the run (maybe), and made things much worse by becoming even more overheated.
2) Was taken for Medical Attention Right Away.
3) Listened to the Medical Staff
Just Wait til Next Year!
