I am training for a sprint or two this summer, but my local YMCA is having an indoor triathlon in two weeks. They advertise it as a 15 minute swim, 20 minute stationary bike, 15 minute treadmill run. I assume the volenteers will keep track of your distance and ther person who travels the farthest distance wins. I have a couple of questions, has anyone done one of these? If so, what are transisions like? Do they stagger start? Any advice? Thanks!!

I did an indoor this winter - but it wasnt a time competition - it was a distance, real short - like 6 laps in a pool - 4 miles on a stationary bike & 2 miles on a tread
so I dont know how a timed one would work other than your suggestion the longest distances in those times wins
the one I did, the transitions were staggered because the equipment and pool were all in different rooms, so you took your time between the events and the clock started again once you started
I did it just to get moving during the crappy pittsburgh winter months - it was sorta fun - I dont strongly recommend them, but at least its something & at least its warm inside !!

University Tri Club does one at Southern Illinois University, this weekend in fact!
Format is a little different, they have an indoor track and they count your laps.
I say go for it! It's really a lot of fun, and a nice stress-free way to start your season.
(The weather will be perfect......your tires won't go flat.......no dogs will chase you.....etc.....etc.....)

The format of the indoor tris is usually 10' swim, 20' bike, 15' run. You will have a volunteer keeping track of your distance. There are waves every 10 minutes, since there is limited equipment. You will probably have 10' between the swim and bike, and 5' between bike and run. Since your "score" is based on total distance covered, obviously the event favors strong cyclists.

Don' t go out too fast on the swim and go anaerobic. I see this all the time! But since the bike and run are short, just go for it and enjoy!
