a mapping look at Olympic medals
Well the 08 one can't be complete yet, so perhaps the sports they excel at haven't all completed?
oh good ol' 1980...
That's really cool. I wonder how the total number of medals awarded has changed over the years?
Very cool, I love maps!
I thought the early games were really interesting on this map. Clearly, where the game was held vastly influenced who won the medals. I'm guessing that was probably due to transportation issues? That traveling teams just wouldn't be able to send a very big contingent maybe. Or perhaps the hosting country also got to seat the judges or something else entirely?? Very interesting.
I also thought it was fascinating how many medals East Germany picked up in the communist-bloc years, for such a relatively small country.

Yes, those were the days when East German "women" shaved their mustaches daily and had bigger biceps than Ah-nold.....
1904 just made me laugh...I think US won more medals there than were even offered in the olympics before and for like 20 years after.
We must have just been making up events on the fly to give medals for
Hey Ky Thanks for the link. My kids were checking it out and got a real kick out of it.
Nothing to it, but to do it
Good to find so many other mapheads :) Now I know why so many of us love our Garmins -- maps are just a cool way to look at data.
Man China and the good ole USA better be glad that the USSR is no longer one unit. Look at the count from all the old block countries. They would be smashing both of us on count and on golds.
Although if they were one country still they would have less medal chances, right? Instead of each of them having a couple people/teams in events, it would only be the one.
very neat, thanks for sharing
Very cool map. I like that you can see the sports that they offered back in the day. Did you see what made up the "triathlon" in 1904? Long jump / shot put / 100 yards. I wonder what the transition was like?
Nice link Kylie,
At least Canada got on the map, after the first week it looked doubtful, then Simon Whitfirld kicked in with a triathlon silver.
How does a guy from Togo get a Kayak medal?
He must train by being chased by crocodiles.

I;m thinking I could compete for Tonga in Triathlon in London if I switched nationalities.

Very cool!
Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.
