how many gels do you take during a sprint? i'm just wondering..and i don't see any point in taking any gels for the runs or bikes or swims that i do now, but come race day, or even the time i'll be doing the simulation try i might try a gel, because i use alot of gels during long days of ulitmate or ultimate tournaments and they are awesome.

For a sprint? Maybe one on the bike (one hour after the start) and maybe one with caffiene at the start of the run.

I have one with me on sprits, but have never used one.

During a simulation tri - Yes. Spirit I don't use one, but have one. Make sure to eat breakfast that morning.

If you are thinking of using a gel I strongly recommend you try it before the race (during your simulations) to see if you have any negative reactions to the gel, and whether or not it gives you a boost in energy and/or performance.

How long (abouts) will a sprint take you? If it's going to take you more than 80 minutes I'd say to take a gel about half way into your bike leg.

Weary is the path that does not challenge.

I carry one just in case but I never really use it.
I have one maybe 15 minutes before the start of a sprint.

If I ate a good dinner the night before and had a good breakfast a few hours prior then my glycogen stores are pretty full, (about 2000 calories).

At a pretty strong effort I burn about 700-1000 calories an hour. Depending on the length of the sprint event, difficulty, heat and humidity I normally would finish well under 2 hours so my glycogen stores should be sufficient.

I take in some gatorade which just puts a little in my tank and then I eat afterward.

Nothing to it, but to do it

I do a gel with caffeine about 20 minutes before the swim start and that's it. A sprint usually takes me around 1:15, give or take, so anything more than that gel-wise would probably do more harm than good.

As Beads pointed out, a body's glycogen stores will probably be sufficient for the first 1.5 - 2 hours, depending on circumstances.

i take in caffeine before just about every workout, it helps me focus and helps me keep the intensity up...i like the mocha cliff gel, advocare's accelgel, and the strawberry banana powergels.

None during sprints. 2 E-caps near the end of the bike is all.

[I'm getting a deja vu feeling... weren't we just here?]

One on the bike just because. You have about 2000 calories in your glycogen stores which should provide more than enough to get through a sprint.

[I searched for it. Couldn't find it though.]

One right before the swim, then one before the end of the bike, so it kicks in for the run.

I just do one right before the swim (w/ caffiene) and have some sort of watered down electrolyte drink in my transition area for just before the run. You shouldn't need much for a sprint.

For my last sprint, I took one before the swim and then just drank Accelerade mixed with water on the bike. I keep a couple in the bag on my bike just in case. I saw one woman at my last race using electrical tape to stick them on her frame. An interesting idea that never occurred to me.....

Electrical tape on the frame does work well -- a bonus if you start a bit of a tear and place the tape right at the tear line on the gu: then the tab stays taped on the bike and you only shove the packet into your pocket after you have it :)

Well I guess there's another reason why I should wear a jersey to race in. As of right now I have no pockets, hence the no gels during the bike.

Without a jersey you can stick them up the leg of your tri shorts, too

meh it can be a bit after the gel is open, but it makes you good at getting all the gel out to avoid the sticky ;) But then again, given that I've already peed in my wetsuit and then usually on the bike as well, I guess it just doesn't matter that much to me ;) I just rinse it off with a waterbottle later.
