open water swim etiquette/rules ?
If you are talking about a mass start swim...there are no rules! ;) Except don't get caught intentionally kicking anyone...
If using your watch beep helps you...by all means. If this is your first OWS, bear in mind that sometimes pacing goes out the window depending on wind, waves, current or how many folks are trying to crawl over your back.

Beep away. You probably won't hear it though. OWS is much louder than swimming alone in a pool.
i'm a bit confused, is it just for an ows or a race. if for an ows only then who cares. yes it's much harder to keep a pace in an ows especially if you are on your own. i just take my rough time for a distance in a pool and just set my stopwatch and go.
now for a race you might not hear it if you are swimming with 200 to 1000 people in a mass start race unless you are leave at the end. if it's a time trial start you might since you are spread out. in a race your adrenaline and the others swimming around you will probably drown out the beep unless you have an indrustrial strenght watch with a super lout beep. i barely hear mine in the pool the beep is so faint. like anton said, your pacing goes out the window depending on wind, waves, current or how many folks are trying to crawl over your back.
there are no rules for beeping so just do it if you need to or want...

i can usually hear it ( i have nightmares about it after tough swim sets...) i just wanted to make sure it wouldn't piss off anyone else. i'll be using it for the chicago tri, so i guess thats a wave start. i don't start in the front/middle, i'll probably be off to the side. when i'm swimming near people I can use them to pace, but if i get in some open space i tend to slow down.
they can definitely be annoying -- sometimes a person in my pool has one, and it does bug me. However, would I ever say anything? No -- it is a training tool that works for them and is not above and beyond what is polite. Do I like it? No. But I'll live :)
The last thing I am worrying about is somebody else's watch beeping during an OWS.
I am busy thinking about (in no particular order of course) my form, the water, getting kicked, watching the bubbles ahead of me, sighting, breathing, getting my goggles knocked off, etc...
;-)
Nothing to it, but to do it

+1 I hate hearing the beeping sound in the pool, it distracts me from lap counting which is hard enough as it is....7...7....7...7...8...8...8...8, was I on 7 or 8? Damn! 7...7...7...7...

is it against the rules or poor form to set a watch timer to beep every 1:30 seconds? It helps me with my pacing because i tend to lose track of time in the water and distances all run together, so if i want to up my speed for x time or x distance i am clueless. i'm worried someone else might hear the beep and think its something from an official etc..
