Bike Fit and Buying a Bike
I'm think most people are reffering to being fitted on a cycling position fixture like;

That way you know your fit coordinates "before" you plunk down your hard earned cash.
Getting fit means a shop will get all of your measurements and then determine which bikes and sizes fit you best. If you are an average height person, they will probably have a bike in stock, otherwise, they will order one. If you buy the bike from the shop, the fit should be free.

Hi all!
Quick related question
I am just getting interested in the triathlon but i currently ride BMX. I know a lot of the beginner sites say ride what you have but I'm not riding a 20" any distance.
A colleague's son rides at a professional road race level and has a full carbon frame and a whole load of components going for a really really good price. the only thing is its a 54cm and I'm just under 6ft tall.
My logic is telling me I'm used to the small bike and when i ride MTB's i ride a 18" with the seat high. I have it built up in my studio with no seat or bars so i can't get a really good feel for it.
Basically I'm looking for a little bit of advice if it would be suitable before I start splashing out.
Im not sure if I'm convincing myself it will fit because its really good kit?
Thanks in advance
Nath
You could take it down to a local bike shop and ask them if they can get you on it. Who knows... the frame size might actually be a little bigger and with a long stem and the saddle jacked up...
Otherwise buy a bike that fits or your just wasting money.

Test it...I'm 6ft tall and ride a 54cm road frame. Depends on a lot more than your overall height.
As for the OP, if you feel like the LBS is trying to sell you what they have on hand no matter what, go to another one (if possible). Good LBS's will do whatever they can to get you on the perfect bike. The happier you are with them the more referrals they get, plus you come back for more gear, plus you decide that they're the ones you trust for maintenance.
+1 jsk85 - I worked many years at a LBS ... service and parts is where they make money. The profit margin on the bikes they sell is usually pretty slim ... especially if you consider that they have to assemble them, fit them, provide free adjustments for the first year, etc. The goal of a good LBS is to have a happy customer that comes back for parts, accessories, and service.

Hello everyone,
How do you know what size bike to buy? Sometimes I get the feeling the LBS is either trying to sell me whatever they have left or they don't really know what they are doing. Many people suggested getting a professional bike fit however it seems kind of pointless if you have the wrong sized bike.
Gotta lose that head fat.
