How to hydrate during long runs?

I start to feel dehydrated after 15km, but I never bring fluids with me. I hate running while holding a bottle. What do you guys do on your longer runs to keep hydrated?

I could carry two dollars with me and stop off and 7/11 for a drink, but the idea of having to spend 2 dollars every time I go for a long run doesn't really appeal to me.

Is it silly of me to want to pit stop at a McDonald's washroom to drink some tap water? :(

Get a super-hero belt. Every long run I go on I have one of them fuel-belts, I can run 20 miles on just my lil 4 bottles and goodies in the other bat-man pocket. If batman wears one, why shouldn't you?

Weary is the path that does not challenge.

+1 for the Fuel Belt. It fits great and doesn't move at all while running.

Fuel belt or bottle that has a handle. Did a 15 miler last weekend and the bottle was just enough.

You can also plan your run from water fountain to water fountain if there are any where you run...

Or stop at McD's, Starbucks and other places that will give you cup of water for free.

+2 on the fuel belt - it's a great investment and will cover your $2 7/11 drinks in no time

Fuel belt or similar product. CamelBack makes some products, but the typical complaint is that they slosh around too much. Or go old school and hide bottles along your route (but that's a whip). Ol' timers like me remember the day when Coach wouldn't let us have water during runs because we would get "water logged." I drink out of the ever-present sprinklers in the summer. McD's is a good strategy.

I also hated holding a bottle in my hand ... until I tried Fastdraw. You don't have to hold the bottle at all ... it just hangs on your hand until you need it.

I tried the Fuel belt concept as well but the hand-held idea works better for me.

I like the Amphipod http://www.amphipod.com/
The bottles are small so they don't slosh much. Very easy to get the bottles on and off the belt.

i carried a bottle for my last 15 mile run, i ran out with about 5 miles left. as i was running i was looking at the front of houses to see who had a sprinkler going or a hose attached to the front. luckily after 10 minutes i found a house that had no cars in the driveway and all the lights off with a hose! i turned it on, filled up my water bottle and ran again. i would not recommend this method.

Run loops so that every 2,4,6 or whatever miles you come back by the car...
I carry a hand held... belts bug me.

+3 on the fuel belt, specially on long runs.
When running loops I leave a bottle in the start. Once it disappeared, but it is better than carrying it around.

I wear a belt with a regular sized water bottle... I got used to it.

I sweat a lot for whatever reason, so I also bring $5 and hit a gas station for some Gatorade or water on anything much over 1.5h, especially when it's hot.

I prefer not to do loops... there and back at least feels like I'm getting somewhere. :) Even though I'm not. :)

+1 on Anton's suggestion. I find a good place to park, keep a nice cooler full of goodies in the car, and do a series of 2-4 mile loops and out and backs. I feel no need for repetition so I mix it up and head in all directions. To be even more strategic, know of a good water fountain a mile or so from your car, so you are even less geographically confined.

I'm lucky where I live because the running and biking trails all have drinking fountains. If I'm going on a run elsewhere, I either run loops and come back to the car, or I bring a fuel belt.

I didn't notice if anyone mentioned fuel belt, but that may be the way to go.

i have the fuel belt (4 - 8oz flasks) and recently got a nathan belt for longer runs (2-20oz back bottles). Both are very comfortable. The nathan pack has three little zip compartments for gels, keys, cell phones..

I have the Nathan 2 bottle belt since I don't like much added weight when going long. It's got 2x10 (or maybe 12) oz bottles and a back pocket for gels, keys, etc...It works great, but I only use it for runs of longer than half-mary. I tend to retain my water pretty well before that, which is why I only go with 2 bottles as well

Did anyone mention fuel belt?

I have the helium w/4 8oz bottles. On longer runs or really hot days I make sure I go by a park fountain or somewhere that I can fill it up if I need to. For runs up to 6-7 miles I don't take anything. Up to 12-13 I take the belt with just two bottles. For longer runs I take all 4 bottles.

The little pouch attached to the belt is handy too. I keep mine full of toilet paper just in case of emergencies as I don't want to have to try to explain to my wife why I came back from a long run with one sock missing.

The ulitity belt is okay but don't use the cape. Only Batman can work the cape ;-)

Carrying $$ is a good backup but I would rather use one of the other methods.

To each their own. :) Just listing it as an option others might use (ie. me!)

Reason: I'm one sweaty bugger, so I need >1 bottle over anything longer than 1.5h or so, especially when it's hot... I don't really want to carry that, and I avoid going back by the house if I don't have to. Prefer to go a long way out in my long run, keep it interesting.

I tend to drink a lot. I use a fuel belt and on hot long run days I carry 4 of the 10 0z bottles. 90% of my long runs are on a multipurpose trail with restrooms with water fountains every 2-3 miles. Usually I carry 2 Accelerade and 2 water. I drink down half way of the accelerade in both then just top it off so I don't have icky tasting water (not that it matters in that situation). You really dont notice the fuel belt being there and as you drink it gets lighter anyway. Good practice for a race, then you will feel lightweight..kinda like wearing a couple swimsuits for drag in practice :)
