I'm considering signing up for this since I blew up on my run at Steelhead and fell a bit short of a Clearwater slot, yet I still want something to do later in the year so I keep training for next year.

Pros: 1) It's in Vegas. 2) It falls on the same weekend as my, birthday. 3) It's in Vegas.

Anyone know of a con? Or have any experience with the course?

I did that race last year. The swim is excellent, the bike is rather hilling, which might be excellent if you're strong in the hills. There is 1 loooooong climb up to t2 (yes the transition areas are seperated) and the run is a pancake. and it's in Vegas.

AND for some reason there isn't much competition in the LV area compared to MN anyhow. You're 26? I'd bet you could take your age group. There are 4-5 solid guys there that are pro level, but then there's everybody else.

If you want more specifics as well, I'd be happy to fill you in.

So from what I can determine, the last 5-6 miles you climb a solid 1000 ft. Are people attacking this on tri bikes or prefering to roll with drops? With the terrain out there, I feel like the better option may be to get some clip ons for the roadie (I just picked up a Talon, so it's not really that big of a compromise) and keep the drops on for the climbs. Also, I'm a horrendous climber, always in too high a gear, mashing my way up, so the roadie would at least let me sit a bit more upright and get more air into the lungs.

Temperature wise, the desert heat isn't too brutal?

Just remember it's dry...low humidity means you probably won't sweat as much as you're used to, but the hydration is still going away...just evaporating. That's where I feel people who go west for desert tris tend to get themselves in trouble.

The last couple miles are a real bear of a climb. I'd recommend leaving the tri bike at home and taking the roadie for sure. Clip ons are a maybe but you'll only be using them for the decents, that loop is either up up, or down down. I loved it!

Make sure your bike is in a high gear in T1 as the climb out to the loop is 7% +

As for the heat... bring plenty of water. There's only 1 water 'table' on the run as well so take a big gulp before you head out.
