I'm looking to purchase my first Tri Bike so i can start training for next summer.
I did some online browsing and found alot of Tri Bikes are over 1000 if not 2000 dollars. Does anyone have any suggestions for me regarding where to look for a cheap, but still good Tri bike; preferably under $1000????

For that range you'll probably have to look used. But to do that you want to be sure you have an understanding of the components (there are different levels) and what size you need. Unfortunately this just isn't a cheap sport. You might want to just get started on what you have available (any bike at all? A friend with a bike you could use?) and then once you figure out what you like look into buying.

Ditto on kylie's comments. I trained for a year on an old Giant hybrid and only got a Scattante R-560 ($900) for the race. Not in a tri bike class, but it goes faster than I'm comfortable with, and I can always add an aerobar later.

will probably need to take it to the local bike shop to assemble and get fitted that's probably a couple hundred more.

I dont recommend bikes direct. My buddy ordered a bike off of there and was missing stuff on his bike, like some set screws and stuff. I would try end of season buying. Go and try some bikes out at your LBS's and just tell them you are looking and comparing, they should understand that you need the right fit and will not want to compromise. Then wait until it goes on sale @ the end of the season and check it out.

Otherwise, check Craigslist and go to someone local.

Good luck

yes you can of course on ebay

directbike or direct bikes.com something like that

you may get a road frame with clip on bars. YOu have to be carful with that. If aero bars are not adjustable yo will be in not correct position. also it would be best to have a fast forward seat pot if to use a road bike geometry.

I went through what you are about 6 months ago. I was just getting into the sport, and couldn't justify (nor convince my wife) $2K on a new bike for a sport that I might discover I don't like. I did A LOT of searching and research. In the end I went to my LBS, got fitted, then watched ebay for a bike in my price range ($500) that was the right size & geometry. I ended up buying a slightly used Mercier for $500. Here's the model: http://www.cyclesmercier.com/big_aero.html After I got it, I took it back to my LBS for another fitting to make sure it was right for me. All told, I've got about $900-$1K wrapped up between the bike, fittings, new pedals, shoes, new seat post & stem for proper fit, etc.

It's nothing like the quality of a $2K bike, but it has served me well (over 1K miles & counting) with nothing but the usual adjustments. My goal is to eventually buy a good bike, but only after I gain more experience and become more competetive in my age group.

My LBS guy has been really cool through this, and when I told him that I want to buy a good tri bike from him eventually, he suggested my next step be a set of race wheels for the bike I have that could eventually be used on a higher end tri bike.

Their sales tactics can be misleading. The “other” components such as the free aero bars, seat, seat post, free pedals, etc are of very cheap quality. Unless you know how to properly assemble, tune, and fit a bike you will still need to pay for this help. When you buy from an LBS they will typically throw in some freebies, free fits, free tune-ups, etc which you will not get over the Internet. In my opinion, in the end you end up paying about the same for less bike.
