im doing my first triathlon in may and it has an open water portion. i'm planning on getting a wet suit, but what is a "tri suit"? im a pretty strong swimmer so i would like to set some pretty fast times in the water. also what do you wear under a wet suit when you change to ride the bike?

I've done all the tri's that I've done in just my aquablade, but I'm planning on trying a wetsuit this year. If you are a swimmer, you might be more comfortable starting out with just your suit (or tri shorts -- those would probably be better) and pulling on a top after the swim... You can probably find a place that rents wetsuits for your tri, but try it in training first. I think a lot of people wear tri shorts and a tight top underneath their wetsuits and wear that for the whole race...

its a 800m swim in 72 degree water. i could use my aqua blade but i was wondering if that would be too cold. thanks for the info.

That's just personal preference from there...
72 degrees is a touch chilly, perfectly bearable... you'd warm up.... and possibly get hot if wearing a wetsuit. Especially if you intend to race for a top swim split. If you find swimming in a wetsuit faster, you might save a little time in the water, but would you lose it taking the wetsuit off since its such a short swim?
I guess if you have the opportunity, practice swimming hard in 72 degree water with and without a wetsuit and see how it feels...
Also, I'd try biking and running in your aquablade to make sure that that's comfortable before you do it in a race... there's another thread somewhere about that and which tri shorts etc...
