ok, i'll admit it... the training has been less than ideal recently. i only have myself to blame (but i still believe that a nasty boston winter and a semester that is trying to kill all PT seniors before they graduate has to take *some* credit..) so as motivation i've been looking for upcoming races and such so i can get some dates out there that will force me to get back on track. i've been a little disappointed in the new england race selection, and rather excited for other races i've seen in florida, las vegas, pittsburgh (home sweet home) and arizona. which leads me to my question... how does one travel to a race? (i know, go buy a plane ticket and a hotel room... ;) ). but i mean, how do you get your bike there? ship it? i don't think i'd want to rely on that days before a race. rent a bike? borrow a bike? or should i stick to my little corner of the country? what do you guys do?

also, any recommendations on new england races? preferably in the boston area since i don't have a cah...

thanks....
:)

I haven't done any of these but these are the ones that the mit tri club is doing this year:
1) Mooseman Quarter/Half Ironmans (June 4th/5th), Bristol, NH
2) Falmouth Sprint Tri (July 23rd), Cape Cod, MA
3) Witch city Tri (August 7th), Salem, MA
4) Boston Monster Challenge (Labor Day weekend), Boston
I doubt I'll be around boston over the summer, but i'll do the monster challenge when I get back...
I guess if all else fails you could spam the triathlon email lists at all the boston area colleges begging for transportation ;-) Just don't tell them I told you to do that...

thanks catwood... i did the monster last year and it was fantastic. but this year i won't be in beantown after the end of august. i'll definately check out those other races you mentioned... and as for begging for rides, i just convince my friends who do have cars to do the race with me... they all think i'm nuts but the few that i have actually dragged along loved it :)

annie,
so you've never travelled a bike by air?
Bike carriers can run as much as $400 new. Maybe you can get a used one.
Most airlines charge for the bike, bastards, on domestic flights I think. Phone around the airlines and ask.
USTF members get some kind of discount for bike fares. You should check that out.
If you can't afford to buy a bike carrier, or borrow one. If you must box it (cardboard) you can probably get one from your bike shop and you should ask them for some tips on packing it.
I am assuming you have a pricey road rocket that is worth the trouble of taking care of it.
With my MTB, I just turn the bars and remove the pedals. It's tough.
For my road bike. I do the same but put it in a plastic bag. You see my bike is not very special or expensive. One of the benefits is I don't have to worry about it much when I travel, but your baby may deserve more attention.
Luck to you,
PoC
