Ford Ironman Florida - how hard is it to get in?

I have heard it's really difficult to get into the Ford Ironman Florida in Panama City, FL unless you are willing to drive down there to register the day after the race. Does anyone have any experience with this who can elaborate if this is true or not?

Thanks

You better be there and volunteer. After the racers, volunteers get next priority. I wouldnt doubt that it will sell out on site.

The day of one line entry...are on the verge of being over.
Triguy is spot on.
The priority appears to be:
Racers first, the day before the race for next year.
Volunteers, second, on site the morning after. (It's how I got into IMLP for next year.)
Everyone else third, on site the morning after.
The theory is to then open registration on line for the remaining slots after noon of the day after.
IMLP and another IM ( I think) so far this year were ON SITE SELLOUTS....no slots released on line.
Now that the IM community sees how the wind is blowing now, you can bet, they'll have plenty of volunteers and a long line Monday morning.
Go Volunteer...it's a great way to wrap your head around the IM experience. My wife and I had a blast!
Volunteers are accepted on line at the race web site. Do that. My aid station captain told us that people were being turned away from the Volunteer tent at IMLP because they had enough They keep track of who is volunteering and the skinny is that they will check that list against who shows at registration. I know that at my station before we were handed our T-shirt (your ticket into registration) our names were checked and checked off.

I've registered to volunteer at the 08' IMFL. I didn't know about the chance to register for the race until after I had signed up. (that's one heck of a plus if you ask me) I mainly decided to volunteer to see how the event was ran, the start, transitions, tents, aid stations, ect.

I'm planning to compete in th 09' event and any preview of what I'm in for will be a big plus.

I've not received my assignment yet, (anyone get there's already?) but I'll will attend the race this year if I get to volunteer or not. If I have to wait until after the race to register, I'll be there early and be bringing a chair.

Good luck.

At IMLP. the first guys in line got there at 12:30...right after the race ended. But they were not Vols and had to wait to register after all the volunteers had gone through. A friend and I got there just before 6 (registration didn't open till 9) and there were probably 200 folks ahead of us.
Good on you J. Michael for Volunteering. Don't forget to take your t- shirt Monday Morning!...No shirt, no Volunteer line. I saw it happen and man were those two guys steamed! ("No! We Volunteered! Really!" 'Then, where's your shirt?' "Uh...." )

You know I would volunteer or even drive/fly down there the next day for regisration, but I'm doing a HIM in Wilmington, NC the same day............I may just do Cozumel in 2009 and then volunteer at Florida next year. It would give me a great insight on how things are run at an IM. I'm trying to qualify for Hawaii (isn't everyone though?) and it really makes it difficult - do you sign up for Florida in 2009 after volunteering? Well, Cozumel is after Florida so if I were to qualify in Cozumel, then I would be out $500+ or just do two IM's in one year. It's a loop - no matter what you are shelling out some dough one way or another.

Thx alot for the input - this is what I needed to hear.

I got lucky and signed on through Active
