Alright I am pretty new valve extenders.

My rear valve extender (topeak) has been leaking when inflating the tire. I have been able to get it up to PSI and then pull the nozzle off quickly, so it is pretty much up to pressure. Today the $#%# extender came off stuck to the nozzle head of the pump.

Besides ordering a replacement valve from %#$# topeak. I have a zipp extender laying around, which I can screw on the presta valve, but when I go to inflate it it doesn't feel like it is doing anything, and the PSI meter just goes up and down with alot of air going out. When I pinch the tire, it feels almost up to pressure but the pump will not give me a reading.

1. Can I screw the Zipp extender on and pump up the tire?

2. When I get the replacement extender can I just screw it on, or do I have to rip off the tire put the extender on and then re-glue?

3. Are aero rims usually this annoying?

I am all bike maintenance, but it seems I like I spending more time with faulty parts this past month... this is why I love running. I'd take to my LBS, but they are 45 minutes away.

1. Make sure you have the right tubes. There are tubes with valves that have flat spots. These are for removing the valve. These are no good to use with extenders, they allow air to sneak out.

2. Use Teflon tape on your valves to ensure a proper seal.

3. You can give the valve a quarter turn twist with plyers to ensure the valve doesn't close.

Do you have to leave the valve extender on the valve? I have always left my on the tube when I ride, but after looking that picture manual on topeak's site, it looks like you can remove them after you inflate the tire? Is the correct?

I could unscrew the working extender off the front tire and use it to inflate the rear if this is the case.

i have zipp flashpoint wheels. I was told by several people that the valve extenders just SUCK and many people don't even bother with them. I just use tubes with 80mm valves and threw the valve extenders in the junk draw. I'm not saying they don't work but i just heard from enough people they don't like they. The only downfall is some places don't stock the 80mm, even the 60's weren't long enough. I always buy 10 at a time as i ride over 2500km a year and expect the flats.

You want to leave the valve extender on the valve.

The problem is this...

This valve has a removable core. Notice the flat spot? Air bleeds around it. You don't even notice this when you're buying tubes. In fact, I find more tubes like this than not. Just look for valves that are completely round, wrap them in Teflon and you will have no problem with valve extenders again.

I love the tufo valve extenders. although, you'd want to buy at least 3.

2 for the set, and 1 for the flat.

Vittoria Value Extenders work well. Buy the tubes with the removable cores. You take the core out, screw on the extender, and then screw the core back in. They never, ever, ever, leak. They give you the little tool to do this, and you can stick it in your saddle bag, or if you don't use one, in your jersey or patch kit.

I got a ton, and pre-install them on my two tubes that I carry when I race. I use them with 80mm stem tubes. I get mine at Excel Sports, but I'm sure they're widely available.

+1 on using teflon tape to ensure a good seal.

+1000 on buying tubes with 80mm valves. Gets rid of the whole extender issue and makes for a happy rider! :)

I had this problem with my rental wheels this year! What a frustration that was...thank you for a very clear explanation & photo!!!

Do they sell tubular tires in 650 with 80mm valves. I seem not to able to find them.
