Jammers. Are they the answer to my question?

So.
I am new (I mean I have never competed before and will be this Saturday) to triathlons and really was just wondering what kind of gear I need to invest in, and what can wait. The tri I am in this weekend is a sprint, 1/2 mile swim, 20.4 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. I have, until about now, been swim training in the same swimsuit I wakeboard in. I would like to say it was because I wanted to train with extra drag, but in reality, I was just too lazy to go and buy some swimwear built for triathlons. Today, I am going to buy a pair of TYR jammers, hoping to bring down my swim times. I guess my main question is whether or not I should just do the whole race in the jammers, or if I should pack running shorts, biking shorts, and the swimwear? That seems a bit over the top for running a 5 K and biking 20 miles. I don't think I need padded shorts for an hour on the bike. Also, next summer I hope to compete in an olympic distance and perhaps a late H.I.M., what kind of gear will I need to upgrade to in order to survive the longer distances?
Thanks,
Karl.

you shouldn't trying anything new on race day but I think your butt will probably survive riding w/ no cushion for 20 miles. but i'd try running in them before race day and see how that feels. in the future you should probably invest in some trishorts. bike shorts w/ a small cushion that doesnt feel like a soggy diaper during the run some good ones are made by louis garneua, titanwear, desoto and zoot

Tri-shorts

Just about the tri-shorts. I know I was considering a pair of cheaper ($50) tri shorts instead, but read on one of the posts in a different topic that tri shorts break down really fast in the chlorinated pools. Is this true? Seeing as the race day is only 3 days away, should I just get the tri-shorts, do the race in them, and wait until I'll be training in the pool a lot more to invest in the Jammers (because I know I can find a better deal on Jammers online anyways)?

I wear tri shorts for races and bike rides and sometimes run, but I swim in a swimsuit to avoid extra chlorine time. For a single race in a pool I'll just let them get chlorined and then I'll rinse them out and they are ok.

If you are looking to buy training gear that will work for this race, go for the jammers. If you are looking for your race gear, and will train in something else as a regular thing in the pool, go with tri shorts.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll go for the tri-shorts for now and get some jammers for training in the pool after this race (being on a college budget is no fun!). One last kinda non-important question tho.
For jammers, should I go 100% polyester (I guess they last longer) or polyester/lycra mix. The price is about the same and I really don't understand the differences. Thank you guys for your cooperation with all my questions!

You can suck it up for a sprint race and do it in jammers but I would invest in some trishorts.
Save the jammers for pool training, and rinse them well.

Use the trishorts for your events

Nothing to it, but to do it

Polyester will last for ever in the pool. I have a suit I am just sick of because I have had it for years, but cannot justify getting a new one because it works just fine. Use the jammers as beads said for the pool and the tri shorts for your race.

Yes, it is true, at least with my pair. I have a pair of Hind Tri Shorts, which I used for all my swim workouts, and they are totally broken down. Jammers definitely would be useful for both races and training.

Just go like this: TriGator

All you'll ever "need" to race.

The polyester will last longer, the polyester/lycra holds a bit tighter. If you are on a college budget I'd go with polyester. I went with it for my last suit after being tired of buying new suits all the time, and now I miss suit shopping as it has been so long :)

+1 on the tri shorts for the race --check out sportsbasement.com

+1 on the poly jammers --don't do lycra/spandex you will be buying a new suit every other month, especially if you take to swimming and start swimming a lot each week.

Good luck with your race and have fun!
