Hey all, so this semester in an attempt to both save money and increase my overall training I have committed to biking to campus and my job at least 3 times a week. I have a timbuk two messenger bag but I can't say that I enjoy riding with it much at all, it slips around too much even when cinched down pretty good. I have been looking around and so far I have two different options

Zoot Z-pack training bag ( http://trisports.com/zoot-zpack-bag.html )

or

REI Venturi 30 (http://www.rei.com/product/762506?cm_re=pageContent*productsNo8*Daypacks...)

Basically I'm going to be hauling with me everyday is a macbook 13", a few folders, change of clothes generally just shorts/tshirt, and a 2nd set of shoes (hard to work in bike cleats), oh and baby wipes since work doesn't have a shower and its a 110 degrees out lol. I really want a bag that has the straps that wrap around your torso.

Both would see use doing different things, as I do some moderate ultralight backpacking that I would use the REI pack for, and would use the zoot as my race day pack in all likelihood.

I like the zoot due to the fact it comes with lights, separate wet/shoe compartment, as well as a separate goggles/sunglass area. I like the REI due to the design, think the ventilation system looks a bit more developed. I also like it since it is camel back friendly, that and it is sold by REI who have probably the best customer service on the planet.

Any advice or tips would be great! Oh yeah one last thing I don't have access to a permanent locker or desk area so everything I need for the day of work/school has to go in the pack and stay there.

I have the Zoot Transition bag which is the step up from the training bag. The too are similar in features and seem to only differ in size. I love the transition bag b/c of its functionality. It has tons of pockets to separate everything and the wetsuit bag/wet compartment not only is great for a wetsuit but also great for dirty laundry after a workout. Plus you would also have a good transition bag for race day.

I have a manhattan portage messenger bag that I don't like using in the warmer months (makes me sweat), but it carries a ton. one downside is that even pulled tight you need to slide it back onto your back every now & then.

i have a REI backpack that i prefer because it holds a ton and has some padded ribs in the back that allow a little air to circulate. they don't make it anymore, but it seems like it's most like the venturi 30

i actually use the REI backpack as my tri transition bag

Well i'm heading up to Phoenix today so I will swing by REI up there and see if they have that bag in stock so I can take a closer look, but will probably end up getting that since it is easier to return stuff to REI than where I'd buy the zoot bag.

Is is dumb to suggest not carrying all of that stuff on your back everyday? Maybe it's not a problem for you but when I haul a bunch of stuff around my back really starts to feel a bit uncomfortable. I broke down and got some panniers which really eased the weight on my back. I think of it as strength training now. Just a thought.

The weight doesn't really bother me that much plus, I have to haul the bag all over campus all day long. So it makes life a lot easier if it is more of a traditional backpack set up. Going in today with just about all of my gear to test one bag to see how it works.
