Ok, I really just meant me....

I have a brake that's rubbing on the rear rim and I don't know how to adjust it back where it goes. It's an Ultegra, and if I open the little whiz-ding that pulls both arms off the rim (like when you take the wheel off), that works, but that ain't right. That and the cable is too stretched, so when I pull the lever it pulls all the way up to the bar.

I know how to do this with center-pull canti's on my mtn bike - but this chi-chi road stuff has got me a little scared. Like working on my truck (do) vs working on my car (do not!!).

Don't be so easy on yourself 'cause this one might be all that you have left

my local bike shop people LOVE me b/c I bring it in for anything and everything that I hear (or think I hear) and feel (or think I feel) that might be wrong- and I'm brunette, but not mechanically inclined....and although I did take a "class" on how to change tires, I pray at the beginning of every race to finish alive and not have a flat

OMG - I had to change my second flat of the year with 15 minutes to go before transition closed. The first one was the night before. It's good to get this out of the way. I was thinking I'd take it to the LBS, the guy there makes a mean latte.

Thanks Anton, sure you don't want to come over and fix it for me? You could run all the way from the east coast to NE. Super-ultra-ultra x 10

I think I might have to get some of those blue gloves too. Lord knows what I've been riding through that I don't want to get on my hands.

I keep a pair in my bag incase I have to change a tire on the road. They work great. Hubby gets them at Costco (in the meical area by the pharmacy) and uses them for most of his car/motorcycle/bicycle work since he has an allergy to oil and cant get it on his hands.

Try these 2 things:

1. Grab and twist the entire brake caliper so that the wheel rim is centered between the brake pads with a little space on each side. (If your caliper is too loose, it will twist really easily. If it is fully tightened, it won't move at all. The goal is to have the caliper bolt somwhere between too loose and too tight. You can just use a 5mm hex key to make a fine adjustment once you have the brake centered).

2. If the grab & twist doesn't work because you just don't have adequate spacing between the wheel and the pads, find the barrel adjuster (a little knob just above where the cable meets the caliper), and turn it clockwise to loosen cable tension a bit. That should move 1 brake arm out just a tad and then you can twist the caliper and go for a ride!

My LBS loved me - before it went out of business :( - because I was often in and they'd even show me how they did things. Get it done, and right, but leave with an idea where to start the next time!
