St. Lucia is for lovers (not triathletes)

So, this is totally off-topic and I have no place to put it in these forums, but I just wanted to say I'm back. The honeymoon's over (that sounds bad) and I'm now a married man. Despite the incapable Delta airlines trying to throw wrenches in our plans, we still pulled off a succesful honeymoon just shifted 1 day late since they decided not to let us on our flight to St. Lucia last monday.

It was a week filled with laying by the pool, pina coladas, piton beer (equivalent to bud light+corona+???, so not so good), too much food, snorkeling, rain-forests, and my first ever massage...among other honeymoonish activities.

After leaving I have come to one conclusion. It would be near impossible to be a traithlete in St. Lucia. OW swimming would be great with the ocean all-around, but the fact that the main ring road around the island, also the only road outside the overcrowded cities (which has plenty of great climbs) would be too dangerous to ever ride a bike on since there are no traffic laws outside of the city. Also, unless you are planning on running with a machete and cutting your own path through the rain forest...running is out too (see road comment from above)

So, I returned with only 2 treadmill runs under my belt (and no regrets about lack of training btw). Now i have a little less than a week to get my last build workouts in before I taper for Chicago (my A race) in a week and a half...oops

Anyways, i guess the points were:
- I missed the trifuel community (though not that much) and have plenty of posts to catch up on
- If you were thinking of having a training home in St. Lucia (I know you were)...reconsider
- Wedding rings are uncomfortable if you're not used to wearing jewelry
- Hope to meet some other trifuelers in Chicago next weekend

Congrats...!
You'll get used to the ring...The easier the relationship, the easier it is to wear.

Just don't lose the ring. I am already on my second one after dropping one in the trash at work. You do get used to it after a while. I still take mine off during the work day when it gets uncomfortable. And don't be like the dude at my last tri who wore his during the race, only to lose it in the swim. You can take it off--she'll understand.

You'll get use to the ring. Just don't do like I did and lose it a year and a half after the wedding...while tubing the river...while also drunk...and while my wife was out of town...at another wedding. And definitely don't call her at the reception to tell her that you lost the ring, its a very hard way to find out that women get a little emotional at weddings. Congrats on the wedding, I don't know what I would do if I didn't have my wife.

Hehe, after these stories along with my dad's ring-loss story. I feel like losing the ring is more like an inevitable right of passage than something to be avoided.

Congrats on it all! I've got a couple weeks until the wedding, but I'm already kinda used to the engagement ring feel now (haven't never really worn jewelry before). In fact I miss it a bit when I don't have it on.

You'll get used to the ring. I give my wife the ring to hold if I have to take it off for a race.

Nothing to it, but to do it

Congratulations. I just got married a couple of months ago and also experienced a simliar island honeymoon in Moorea Tahiti. Like you, I had my first massage, went snorkeling, and stayed on an island that had one road that circled the small island. I did enjoy the experience of swimming in open water where the temps were in the high 70s. No shivering at all even after several hours of snorkeling with no wetsuit.

Another first was the experience of open water swims surrounded by several dozen black tip reef sharks. I faced the whole shark fear in one touristy moment and everything turned out ok.

I can't say my open water swim skills have improved because most of the swimming I did was lazy floating around. I didn't run or bike either but hey, honeymoon's a honeymoon.

You are right - wearing a wedding ring feels really odd. I didn't realize my finger swelled up and shrank that much. Some days the ring feels really tight and some days, it almost falls right off. I'm getting used to it and it's already a little scratched up.

i think i know why....i always feel like a jerk putting a ring back on when i leave the gym...i may as well just leave it off and not look like i'm mackin' on the ladies despite being married. they can all see the tan line anyway

Can't get my ring off. Think the wife must have sized it about 1/2 a size small as once it went on 13 yrs ago I haven't exactly removed it except with soap and water and then only to wash it.

Yeah, or when your out at a bar... it's really uncomfortable then. He he he - just kidding.

My ring is platinum, which means it's heavier than depleted uranium. The first week I wore it my finger actually got tired!

I think you should get your wife a platinum ring with big diamonds just to show her how TIRED your finger can get from holding up all that weight :)

Did you talk to her? That's what she says.

I went into a phase of finger training and now it's good to go. But to make the story even more pathetic... her ring was inherited.

Inherited engagement ring: $0.00
Honeymoon received as a gift: $0.00
Getting away with it: Priceless

Ok, mine are platinum and weigh a lot . I think if I complained however I might not ever get another piece of jewlry again--how stupid would that be? I do take it (the engagement ring) off in the summer and just wear my band when training--Have already broken prongs by knocking it around. I fear loosing it swimming or schmucking it up changing a tire or something.

You get used to it. Hubbys is titanium, meaning its indestructable(with a platinum band ) and super light weight. Unfortunately though you cannot resize them.

The wife is certainly supportive of the addiction, but I think tailoring the honeymoon to training would have been the line.

And to the poster who talked about keeping your guard up...it is definately run down in many areas outside the resorts, but the crime rate is actually very low. Probably since the women outnumber the men 2:1 there...that and marijuana use is prevalent according to some of our tour guides.

As odd as it feels to wear that ring, it will grow on you more every day. One word of advice - insure it now! When we got married, we insured my engagement ring and wedding band figuring the diamonds were the expensive part. Didn't bother with my husband's platinum band. Sure enough, he lost it in the Gulf of Mexico while racing last year. It cost over $2K to replace it! Plus another $150 for a titanium "training ring" so that he has something to wear while training, racing, weight lifting, or basically anything else that would scratch or potentially damage/destroy/lose the ring. So he now wears that ring while working out, and I wear an old Irish "claddagh" ring from high school rather than taking a chance with mine.

OHH and FYI you may want to have it re-appraised. The other day when I took it in to get it cleaned they told me that platinum prices have gone way up (originally got mine almost 7 yrs ago) and I should get it re-appraised to increase the rider on the insurance policy.
