Quad issue-rest it or do something light?
I would rest and stretch. If you can swim without your quad being in pain that would be a good way to get some workouts in. It's well worth taking the time to let your body heal otherwise you might injure yourself more and be out for much longer...
Sounds like a mild muscle strain and/or tear. Swim. You won't lose anything. That's the luxury of having three sports to choose from.
+3
Weary is the path that does not challenge.
Good news--I was hoping to hear the swim would be a go. I will totally give that a try and see how it feels.
As far as the stretching goes...I wasn't sure how much of this to do because it does hurt but it might be one of those good hurts. I just didn't want to injure anything worse.
Thanks for your thoughts!
My mother is a yoga teacher in the Kripalu discipline, and when I strain or pull a muscle - she tells me to ice it and then do some REALLY light stretching. After that it is good to warm the muscle up with hot towels or a bath so that the muscle can relax and you experience the full benefit of the stretch - this helps prevent the muscle from snapping back in place like a rubber band after the stretching. Avoid overdoing it, but light stretching when done properly can really speed your recovery.
That said, wait to stretch until you can discern the difference between good stretching "pain" and actual intense muscle pain. The sharpness of the pain can be a good indicator of this. If you experience intense, abrupt or shooting pains while stretching it is probably still too soon.
Hopefully you've solved this by now but I had a similar problem-- a tear in my quad-- last year while training for a marathon. I switched to swimming (no breast, no flipturns) and even though the injury ate nearly a month of training time I still hit my goal-- just mix in speed intervals with long slow stuff and you should be okay.
Other things that helped: this recovery wrap given to me by my brother. I was totally dubious at first, left it in the cabinet for two weeks, but then gave it a try, and it really made a difference. I think it increased circulation or something. I also had three sports massages, and that helped too, even though they hurrrrrrrt.

I just wanted to get a few opinions about a quadriceps issue that I'm having. On Saturday I did a an hour run and then biked to a farmers market and on to do an hour swim. Sunday morning I noticed that my quad was a little sore but nothing major. I then had a brick workout of a 17mile bike and 3 mile run. Afterwards my quad was feeling a little worse but nothing major. I just figured it was tired from the pass two days.
We all piled into a cafe for breakfast and coffee and by the time I stood up ( maybe an hour and half later) by quad was hurting so bad that I could barely walk on with without being in some pretty major discomfort.
I went home and iced on and off and took some pain medication. By the end of the night it was excruciating to walk up and down my stairs. The next day (yesterday) was just as bad so I obviously took the day off from any workouts. Continued to ice and bought some of those icy-hot packs...I was willing to try anything.
Today I think it may be a little better but not much. I'm just not really sure what happened. I don't remember a specific moment that things went bad.
My question is what should I do from here? I guess I could lay off for a few days but I'm not sure if that is what I should do. Should I try to do some light stuff---at least swim (minus the kick-which is minimal for me anyway)?
Just wanted to get some thoughts.
Thanks
