i had several knee surgeries awhile back (about five years ago). i have been doing alot of running lately. i noticed today i have fluid. if i remember correctly that means internal damage??? ice, rest... please PLEASE, don't say doctor.

i was in florida (tampa/clearwater) for the past week. got to swim in the gulf which had lots of waves(believe it or not). it was pretty intimidating to swim... as exercise, if i were just bobbing around it would have been nothing, but face in the water etc... quite different. BUT it was good. REALLY GOOD. i may not like the pool now. the rocking looking for clear space to take in air (without a mouth full of water, it was just so cool.
if there is any one thing a new tri person can do to get comfortable in open water it's this... swim in (through) waves, and cruising along parallel to shore trying not to do 360 degree rolls and spotting. after you get used to it you just feel so awesome. so comfortable with doing what you need to do while progressing forward.

I also have that problem, but mine is just old age. I've tried just about everything but doctors. You need to make sure that you diet is OK and take Vitamine C, Glucosamine HCL, Chondroitin, Collagen and MSM. I use Drinkables® Ultimate Joint Care because it is cheap and available at Sam's Club, http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=379191. Here's some diet tips also, http://allrecipes.com/HowTo/Your-Big-New-Threat-Inflammation/Detail.aspx, although I don't believe the alcohol part: pomegranate juice would be a better option.

However, you will not see immediate results with supplements. The most helpful thing for me was a massage therapist. In one session of 45 minutes, she reduced the swelling by 1/2, showed my wife how to do it, and got rid of all the stiffness. It was amazing! She's on my schedule for next week's taper.

i had fluid on my knee once; it didn't hurt
my doc looked at it and said "ooooh, housemaid's knee"
...something about kneeling a lot...

i iced it a bunch and trained with it and it went away on its own

I have a bad knee that seems to always have at least a little fluid. The knee has been scoped 3 times, and according to the doctor I am not supposed to be running. I don’t listen well. The below helps me a lot:
1. See a chiropractor on a regular basis
2. Custom inserts in shoes
3. Lose weight
4. Fish Oil Pills
5. Supplement: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/univ/flex.html
6. Ice after every workout
7. Substitute running with Cybex Arc Trainer
8. Stretch hamstrings and quads a lot
9. Strength training for hamstrings and quads

i'm a house maid by day, and after training time erodes the rest of the day, I have to beg my wife for forgiveness... :)
all that kneeling adds up ;)

[the "something about kneeling" explanation didn't actually apply to me. I never really understood how I got the condition]

fish oils are great, and glucosamine/chondroitin supps are also amazing. ice can help too. other than that, listen to your body, don't go through pain......i've got a bad knee and am postponing an acl meniscus repair till after the triathlon, one reason why i'm only doing sprint, i also don't wanna be sidelined for that long again during the summer!

i know, i'm not the smartest guy, but w/e.

I haven't run for about a month. We did a run thru of the entire sprint on site, so I know that I can do it. Even if I have to walk some of the time, I'll still finish towards the top (last year, only 4 in my age group, 60-64, LOL). At this point running just does too much damage to my knee. I have a massage scheduled for the Friday before and the Monday afterwards. If I were you, I'd bike & swim: much easier on the knee and only run often enough to know that you can do it on race day. Also, just this week, I've tried a new herbal supplement: zyflamed made by New Chapter. It is the first stuff that has a noticable effect on me. It tastes nasty, but greatly reduces stiffness & swelling. Also, dittos on the ice & weight loss mentioned above. --Sam

i am muscle and bone... mostly bone, so weight loss won't help. as for supplements, has anyone had experience with HI... Purity HI? i have heard good things but those are likely results produced by the company.
i think i am going to run less, a real bummer i was really getting into it and planning to do a marathon late winter-early spring.
thanks all for the help!
