Pedal and Shoe Combo
I'd say hard to go wrong with Look (even with a recall on some older 04'-05' pedals.) They invented clipless pedals, have a larger cleat that reduces hotspots, and my old ones have lasted for over 10yrs.
And you can find some good entry shoes at nashbar.com or performancebike.com, just make sure you use the proper sizing chart for the brand you are getting.
Maybe:
Look Keo Easy Pedal ($69.99 Nashbar)
Lake Tri Shoe ($69.99 Nashbar)
$150ish For the Set. Shipped. That's less than a lot of shoes......
I use the Lake shoes as my trainers and love them. Single inverted tri-strap, Vented toe, and solid sole, and white and black match almost anything.
I use the Look Keo Sprint (next step up from "easy" with adj tension) It's a solid pedal. Easy in/out.
Good Luck!
I have Ultegra PD-6620 on my tri and road bikes. Platform and cleat are similar to the Look style. I like them. Can't really make a shoe reco for you though, because I image there are differences between what men vs. women prefer. All I can say is I've had good luck with shoes from specialized for tri/road, and mountain biking.
Oh and congrats on the new bike!! I'll bet you're having a hard time not staring at it...
I like Sidi b/c they are modular, meaning just about everything can be replaced (heel tabs, buckles, strap, velcro, you name it). Yes, Italian cycling shoes can be steep, but you will ride in them for years. Mine are six years old and smell awesome.

+1 on the Look Keo pedals. Very easy to clip in & out of.
I have Specialized road shoes that are great to ride in, but are harder to remove on the bike or in transition than a tri-specific shoe. A friend of mine has the Lake tri shoes mentioned above & swears by them.
I ride with Sidi and really like them. Sadly, since the NYC tri and hopping into them after swimming in the Hudson, mine smell terrible.
To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!
I ride Shimano SPD-SL's and Specilized Tri-Vent's. I love the Tri-Vent's. They're a little bit expensive but I find them to be really really comfortable.
I also like the cleats a lot that come with the SPD SL's. They're wide enough that I've never had a hot spot or any discomfort on any length of rides.
I found my pedal's for 45 online and the shoes were 160 at a LBS. I would really suggest going to a local bike or tri shop and not just order something online because so many shoes fit very differently. Your foot is going to dictate what brand feels best on your foot. If you skimp on the shoes then you'll be hurting later. Just my 2 cents.

Just purchased a used Tri bike and am looking for a reco on a shoe and pedal combo. I'm not looking to spend a ton, something a step above entry level is what I'm looking for.
