Running Speeds
Well, im not anywhere near your ability, but heres my stats.
I ran the martian half in 2:03. I did the steelhead half in 2:53. I definitely had to walk a couple of the bigger hills, didnt want to risk too high a heartrate ending my race early for me.

My fancy new blogitty blog.

My best half marathon is 1:23. My best run in a 1/2 ironman is 1:27. Obviously courses are different, but on average I seem to run about 30 seconds slower per mile in a tri. When I'm in a run race I'm in the 6-6:20 range. In a tri I'm in the 6:40-7:10 range.
damn!......I knew I was slow, but I didn't think I was "that" slow!
I'm lucky to pull 9:50/mi for 10mi. (last 3 it's hard to say)
How you guys go 6-7min I might never know........
For 10k I run 34 and 37 if it's cool out (add about half an hour to each if it's hot). Faster guys might only be 1-2 minutes slower.

Not fast enough.
3:50 marathon PR, 5:25 IM marathon PR. So, 112 mile bike adds on about :90 for me.
5K 19:30 and 22:00
1/2M 1:40:00 and 2:00:00
that is about what I can manage, but I am a Clydesdale, and running aint my thing. I have only done 2 race distances, Sprint and 70.3.
My Steelhead half was 1:39:30, with all sorts of problems. I was nowhere near prepared for the distance (i.e. longest training run was 11). My half P.R. is 1:11:42.
For 5k, when I was racing cross country seriously, 15:25 open and 16:16 in a tri. So I'm going with about 15 sec/mile for the shorter events.

I do all my training runs between 6:15 and 6:45 for distances. It feels a lot easier when it's just your normal pace.
marathon PR = 3:16. Only IM run split= 4:17
5K PR =18:10. Typical triathlon 5K = 20:30
So I'm going with about 15 sec/mile for the shorter events.
Adding to the sample size:
Half marathon times: 1:40, 1:46
70.3 run times: 2:00, 2:01
10K time: 47:36
oly run time: 52:30
Interesting to see how the spread is consistently longer for some and shorter for others. I WILL break 2:00 for a 70.3 run someday!
Cheers,
Kevin
Running's my worst event, so I'm nowhere near as speedy as most of you folks, here's my data:
10k: :46 ; Oly 10K: 48:50
Half mary: 1:57, HIM Run: 2:10
Marathon: 4:20, IM Marathon 4:53

I don't have enough data to draw a conclusion about my own times, but some variables to consider are nutrition, bike fit, course terrain... and some people purposely save a lot of energy on the bike to ensure a good run. I think those could make a pretty big difference from person to person. But 1:29 HIM compared to a 1:18 open half sounds pretty darn good. Doesn't seem like a lack of bricks would be a big issue there.
xc800runner wrote:I imagine if you took a big enough sample you could come up with a formula like this. 26.2 miles X :30 per mile = 780 seconds, but that's only 13:00 slower for a full tri marathon. I bet the longer races add more like :30 sec per mile of the preceding bike. (112/30 seconds = an hour longer?) Just a navel-gazing thought for a slow Friday. So I'm going with about 15 sec/mile for the shorter events.
It DOES seem kinda slow this morning, doesn't it,....navel-gazing?
Half Marathon 1:45 60 degree weather
HIM 2:00 in 95 degree weather. Hoping to pull a 1:50-1:55 out on my next HIM...as long as the heat stays away this should be possible.
Two common reasons for large time differnces between open run times and tri-event run times are 1) overdoing it on the bike, including bike power "spikes"; and 2) for HIM and IM you might not have a sufficient base to go the distance and you have to slow down, shuffle, or even walk a lot. Poor nutrition plan and/or dehydration also has obvious effects.
Gordo writes a lot about this issue on his website. The basic motto is there is no such thing as a great bike split in triathlon if it is followed by a poor run.
5k - 19:50 - 20:30
10k - I guess I've never run an open 10k and it just sounds too painful - 44:00
Never every raced anything longer...

How much slower does the typical runner go in a tri vs. an open race of the same distance? I ran a 1:29 half marathon at Steelhead last weekend and can run 1:18 in an open half-marathon. What are other people's experiences at this distance and olympic distance? How much time do you slow by?
I am just trying to get an idea if the number of bricks I am doing is sufficient or if I need to put in more work making a comfortable transition from bike to run.... Thanks
