Racing in a speedo?

The answer is yes.

I'm about to go to Rhode Island for Navy training for 3 months, so my season is pretty much over. I'm doing a few local races for fun before I have to leave and thought it would be funny to wear a speedo to one of them. I actually ended up having a pretty good race. And thanks to about half a jar of Vaseline, I had no chafing! I've included some photos for your viewing hilarity. :)

.25 mile swim---5:27 (2/800)
T1-----------------2:28 (2/800)
10 mile bike----21:59 @ 27.3 mph (2/800)
T2-----------------0:46 (3/800)
3.1 mile run----19:02 @ 6:08/mi (9/800) (in my defense, it was hot and sandy)
finish------------49:39 (1/800)

That was actually my fastest bike split ever and my only overall win this year....maybe I need to wear more speedos!

Ok, so you wore a speedo the whole way through. Now the questions is: what the hell were you doing for 2:28 in T1? :P

Your average speed on the bike is about what I get to in an all out sprint.

Better, what the hell was everyone else doing for longer than 2:28 in T1? It's a sprint...

Definately wear it to the Silver Springs race, the cold water will make things interesting (or not so) for the ladies! I wish I could make it that weekend, but we will likely be moving. I'll try, tho.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

The heck with the 2:28 T1...why is he sorry for his 19:02 5k?
Triguy...Cold water should produce more "shrinkage." You would think, at this race, considering the warm water...

We had some issues at about mile 2 on the bike with someone trying to say hello to the world. I had to do a little "dancing on the pedals," as Phill Liggett would say, to make sure the lead cop car didn't pull me over when I started the run....

Ok, if I looked like, not only would I race in a speedo, but I would go to the grocery store in a speedo. And let's be honest here, about %.01 of triathletes look like this. Go you :) But that race distance begs the question: What the hell are you doing racing such a Mickey Mouse distance? Dude, clearly you have the skins to dominate at much farther. Are you showing off? Are you That Guy that shows up to noob rides with your team kit and disk wheel? I bet all the first timers were just a bit intimidated. I'm just yanking your chain ring. :) I'd stroke-out at those speeds.

I love racing in a speedo. The pure freedom you feel on the run is refreshing.

I may have some inspiration for Chicago this year. You still thinking about coming up for that?

Much kinder response over here. If he tried posting something like that over at the slowtwitch forum it would get a rather ugly response to say the least...I guess we are just more civilized here. ;)

I was going to, but I've spent enough money this year getting my ass handed to me. Have fun, though....say hi to Kevin for me....he'll be the one from FL who doesn't embarass himself at races. :)

I can't quite pull off the speedo yet, but I could get these and embarrass my wife and daughters at the pool if need be.
If the water is a little too cold, you could always keep an extra pair of socks in your speedo ;-)

Anyone look at the sizes on these? Option 1 is considerably too big for any respectable swimmer to wear, and for Option 3, while we wear 'em small for racing, I don't think the 22" is going to cover enough to make them legal outside of a Berlin night club.

Who are you calling respectable? Especially those of use who might want to 'hang out' at a Berlin Night Club! ;-)

Seriously, what's so embarassing about crossing the line before all the people in their high-tech racing suits when you're wearing something from your HS swim team days? I raced in a bright orange one in my first tri ever and went 5:15/mile for 5k (after averaging under 19 mph on the bike, though). As a plus, I think I blinded a few of the competitors with my extreme pastiness.

Yo, no idea who this Kevin is, but if he needs a place to stay you can put him in touch with me. I'm not right downtown on the race course, but only about 5 miles from the race start.

I was talking about all the DFLs I've had this year while wearing my high-tech racing suits. :)

I went to school with Kevin and we travel to races together fairly often.....he's one of the pros that actually deserves to be a pro (i.e., doesn't get DFLs!)

My girlfriend may be coming to my next race, and I first warned her about the suit I wear. It's just a one piece skin suit. Imagine if I wore a speedo... Wonder how long we would last together. lol :) Maybe it might make us last longer together.... The possibilities...
