Is there a period of time that you should let pass in between races? So, for example, I was thinking of doing an Ironman in mid July and then another in mid August - a hair over 4 weeks in between. I don't know if I'm naive neophyte, overly ambitious, or just a nitwit.

Will it be your first IM race? What is your background? It really depends on personal recovery and goals.

It will be, yes:-)

Relative to the sprint training that I have been doing I seem to recover very quickly. My personal challenge in that area is hydration, I lose A LOT. I suspect that going sprint, olympic, iron might work out better. I'm going to start a 36 week program around the end of October/November and figured maybe it's possible.

I have not done an Ironman (yet) but I can speak from experience trying to do two marathons within 6 weeks of each other. The first one beat my body up so badly I did not feel like running for a couple weeks after it. Then when I did get back to training I was burnt out. I had been training for 20 weeks before that and mentally I just did not want to do it anymore. By the time the second marathon rolled around I was able to finish it because my conditioning was still there but mentally I was drained and actually had a slower time than the first. The slow time was not what bothered me though, it was the fact that the whole time I was running I was thinking of how much I wished I had not signed up for two races so close together.

In contrast on shorter races like Oly's or even a half marathon (I have yet to do a HIM) I have no trouble recovering and racing within 4 weeks of another race.

The run is definitely what will be the determining factor. Recovering from a marathon is not easy and recovering from an Ironman is tough. At least for me and I suspect many first timers. Some of the pros and those who've been in the sport for a long time could turn around and do 2 in that time period, but even few of them do so. My suggestion might be to do one, and maybe add a couple 70.3 distance races before and after.

At first blush, my answer is "Not a good idea." I take off (from necessity) several weeks after each IM. Not just for physical recovery, but to mentally recharge. I'd go with just one and put 100% into it.

Yeah it being your first, it would be a tough call to invest in both races. You might recover really well, and have no problem with it, and love both races. But more common is to need a break, not just to recover but because the training leading up gets very intense both physically and mentally.
