Hi, I may have just missed this on the site but what is the required age for an Ironman 70.3 race? I am hoping to do the 2009 race in Boise, Idaho but I will only be 15 at that time. Thanks in advance.

Under 18 your legal guardian signs the paper work. If no one is in your age group, you would start with the next age group and so on. Good Goal! I'm hoping that is the time my kid has a few under his belt prior to 70.3.

Hi dtbiker-

Welcome to trifuel. Good luck with your racing whether you take on a 70.3 now or later.

Cheers,

Kevin

I wish triathlon was more accessible when I was younger.

Nothing to it, but to do it

Good luck, Boise was a great race this year. I wish I could have spelled triathlon let alone know what in the heck it was when I was 15, good to see you're getting into the sport at a young age.

Just googling around, some people seem to think the minimum age requirement is 18 for M-dot races. Presumably this includes the 70.3.

I was curious so I just checked the race results from Buffalo Springs (the first 70.3 that came to mind). There was one 15 yo guy in the race. Not much competition I guess, but he was there and went 6:06.

Why do you want to do a 70.3? Have you been doing triathlons for a while? I would think you should stay at shorter distances and try to go fast rather than just try to add distance right now. You could be doing this sport for 60 more years if you don't burn yourself out.

BTW this is coming to you from someone who is 18 years old.

Its just a goal I am setting for myself to train for. To me, it is a much better accomplishment to finish something so few can do than to win something that so many can try. It is more about pushing myself to the limit than actually beating people.

^^^ this says 18.

that says 18 for IM distance....they only cite 70.3 to say that WTC owns those races as well as Ironman

If you are doing the 70.3 just for fun, go for it. But I think you should focus on dominating the local junior circuit. Think "sponsor" from local LBS.

Yeah... it seems like it should be easy to find the answer, but I googled and googled and couldn't. Oh well! Contact the race organizers I guess.

If you are the youngest in the race, you get a lot of attention. It has been my expeirence since '92! The team took an 17 to Hawaii a few years ago and she was on the podium (due to no one in her age group). She did have a good race for her first oly. distance.
